New insurance and AIDS testing now offered at UNL health center By Kari Hulac Staff Reporter A redefined student health insu rance plan and a new acquired immune deficiency syndrome test ing procedure will be offered at the University Health Center, 15th and U streets, this fall. The insurance plan for students costs $199 a year, up from $197. The $75 deductable has increased from $50. The plan is provided by the Mid West National Life Insurance Co. of Tennessee. It will pay for 100 per cent of all covered medical expenses incurred for treatment received at the health center. It pays 80 percent of covered medical expenses up to the first $2,600, when treatment is received from another health care center. And it covers 100 percent in excess of $2,500. Students can enroll in the plan until Sept. 23. They also can enroll in the plan within 31 days after becoming ineligible for coverage under a parent’s policy. Or they can enroll within 31 days after losing insurance coverage through another group policy because of termination of employment, or within 31 days of changed family composition due to marriage, birth of a child or divorce. All students who have paid the $50.88 health center fee are eligible for subsidized rates at the center and the insurance policy. Students enrolled for less than four credit hours must pay $50.88 by Sept. 23 to be eligible for subsidized services and the insurance policy. Health center Director Dr. Gerald Fleischli said the health center’s AIDS testing procedure was recently redefined according to State Health Department guidelines. ‘If students need to be seen, we don’t want them to be intimidated by the appointment system.’ —Dr. Gerald Fleischli Students who are concerned they have been exposed to the AIDS virus may be tested at the health center at no charge. The test includes pre- and post-test counseling. Organized records of this test are kept. Students who have symptoms of AIDS or AIDS-related complex can be tested. Symptoms include severe weight loss, night sweating, a per sistent dry cough or any problem with the immune system. These patients would be charged and the results of the test would be kept in medical records. The test is also mandatory for a person who needs proof that they have not been exposed to the AIDS virus, such as military personnel. The Acute Care and Emergency Service is available during regular hours when an appointment is not immediately available. Fleischli said it is important for students to be aware of the health center cervices. “If students need to be seen, we don’t want them to be intimidated by the appointment system,” Fleischli said. “If they need to be seen, they have to say it." The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. After regular hours the health center is fully staffed for emergency care only. There is a $10 charge for after-hours service if a doctor is seen. In addition to its general clinic, other health center services include an allergy clinic, Community Health Department, Health Aide program in the residence halls, fitness pro grams, weight control, drug coun seling, gambler-problem education and stop smoking programs. “Tcev" The Country’s Best Yogurt All The Pleasure None Of The Guilt Sunday Date Night 8:00 p.m.-12:00 p.m. Bring your date and receive a FREE TOPPING of your choice Student Monday 8:00 p.m.-12:00 p.m. Bring your student ID and receive a regular cup of yogurt for 99r Waffle Cone Wednesday—All Day Waffle Cone 99' *• Waffle Cone Sundae *1.39 211 N.
