Sheldon Art Gallery celebrates 25th year of art and culture Twenty-five years ago, the Green Bay Packers were NFL champions, Presi dent Kennedy was worried about Cuba, and only the most chronic of University of Nebraska-Lincoln students had been bom. It was also 25 years ago that the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery opened at the southwest corner of the UNL campus. Since then, Sheldon has become one of the most prominent art galleries in the Midwest, drawing praise from both coasts and abroad. The gallery contains hundreds of paintings, sculptures and mixed media works, covering several rooms and two stories. The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery fulfills its mission to “reflect and document the visual arts of these United States” by continually featuring vorks by prominent local and nationally renowned artists. The gallery often has solo exhibitions of notable artists along with its regular collection. On display until Sept. 13 is an exhibition by Scottsbluff artist Audrey Towater. Twenty of her Nebraska-in spired “impressionistic action” paint ings will be at the gallery, among them, “Bob Devaney,” "Nebraska Supreme Court,” “Elephant Hall,” "Senators in Action” and "Orange Bowl.” Towater will have a reception Sept. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Sheldon Art Gallery. An important part of the art gallery is its sculpture garden, located just south and west of the building. Like the art gallery, the sculpture garden features work by local and national artists. In addition to its permanent collec tion, the garden is currently displaying three large-scale sculptures by Buena Vista College art professor Mac Horn ecker. Entitled “Post,” “Hitch,” and “Crib,” these works represent memories of the artist’s “experiences on the farms of the heartlands of America” During the school year, the gallery is open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and closed Monday.
