Pettit overhauls volleyball lineup I By Mark Derowitsch Senior Reporter Nebraska’s volleyball team lost three All-America players after last year’s banner season, leaving coach Terry Pettit to overhaul half of his lineup. Pettit faces the tall order of replacing All-Americas Karen Dahlgren, Tisha Delaney and Enid Schonewise, who completed their eligibility last season. As seniors last year, those three led Nebraska to a 29-6 record and a second place finish at the NCAA championships in Stockton, Calif. “Obviously, you never replace the athletes you lose,” Pettit said, "but with the talent we have returning, I think we have the personnel to have a successful season.” Pettit said that Nebraska will rely on returning starters Kathi DeBoer, Vir ginia Stahr and Lori Endicott to form the nucleus of the team. He said Jackie Cook, Angie Millikan and Barbie Young will also have considerable playing time this season. “Those people provide the core of our experience,” Pettit said, “which gives us reason to believe that we should have a pretty good volleyball team.” Pettit said mat tnree iresnmen couia also play: Val Novak — considered one of the top high school setters in the nation last year — and twins Sara and Sue Hesch. "We had a very good recruiting class,” Pettit said, "but in a program like Nebraska’s, freshmen usually don't have an impact until their second year. "Generally, a season is determined by your veterans’ consistency.” Pettit said that the Huskers, who have won 48 consecutive matches against Big Eight opponents, have set a goal of capturing their 12th straight conference championship this year. He said they also plan to challenge for the national championship. Pettit said he is looking forward to the Huskers’ schedule, which includes matches against national powers Penn State, Texas, Notre Dame and Western Michigan. Nebraska ousted Penn State in the second-round of the NCAA Mid east Regional last year by winning a five-set match that lasted more than two hours. "We have a tradition of putting an exciting team on the court and I don’t “ think that will change this season,” Pettit said. "It’s not a matter of pushing buttons, but of playing good volleyball.” Dally Nebraskan (lie photo Nebraska volleyball coach Terry Pettit watches a match last year. The Cornhuskers had a 29-6 record.
