Nee says team is inexperienced By Chuck Green Senior Editor Lack of experience and a tougher schedule are two things Nebraska men’s basketball fans can expect this season, Comhusker coach Danny Nee said. Nee, who posted a 21-12 record and coached Nebraska to a third-place finish in the National Invitation Tourna ment last season, said that the 1987-88 season would be “hard to figure’’ until the team actually takes the court. “We lost quite a few key personnel and we have some big holes to fill, especially up front," Nee said. “We have a relatively young, ve y inexper ienced team.” Nee s’M the nucleus of this year’s Nebr* im will be the two returning starte. I jm last season: Henry T. Buchanan and Derrick Vick. Keith Neu bert, who is playing tight end with the football team this fall, will not return, he said. Last season, Buchanan averaged 8.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, while Vick scored 11.1 points per game and pulled down 5.6 rebounds per game. Nee said senior Jeff Rekeweg, who played in 15 games last season, will also provide leadership for the Huskers. Rekeweg averaged 2.2 points and 1.5 rebounds per game in 1986-87. Richard van Poelgeest also returns. Van Poelgeest, a 6-foot-9-inch sopho more from Ryswjjk, Netherlands, aver aged 2.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per game last season. In addition, Nebraska will have eight newcomers this season. They include: • Jed Bargen, a 6-7 forward who is the son of Nebraska assistant coach Gary Bargen. • Eric Johnson, a 6-2 transfer guard from Baylor. • Rich King, a 7-2 center from Omaha Burke High School. King has worked out in the weight room during the off-season and has a good chance of having some playing time this season, Nee said. • Kelly Lively, a 7-0 center-forward from Torrington, Wyo. • Peter Manning, a 6-8 transfer forward from Seminole, Okla., Junior College. • Beau Reid, a 6-7 redshirt fresh man who will play forward. Reid is the son of Nebraska assistant coach Arden Reid. • Clifford Scales, a 6-1 guard from Westchester, 111. • Richard Smith, a 6-7 forward from Chicago. Rodney Curtis, another Husker re cruit, was injured in an automobile accident this summer and is question able for the season, Nee said. This year’s Nebraska schedule will be more challenging than last season’s, Nee said. The Huskers open the season with a tournament in Hawaii that features Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Stanford and Villanova. Another highlight of the schedule, Nee said, is the first annual Comhusker Classic, which will take place Dec. 4-5 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Ball State, Lehigh and Ohio will join Nebra ska for the tournament. W YOirVI BEEN WUTBIG TOO LONG FOR AN AFFORDABLE HABKXIL. AFFORDABLE PERM— ...
