What to do in Lincoln? Boy, oh, boy, the possibilities are endless. Hmm, could sneak into a swimming pool, could drive around in the heat, could drink a lot, could go to another movie again . . . If only there were someplaces in Lincoln that you could go and see a whole bunch of artists, craftsmen, artisans, and craftisans. Someplace where you could get pottery, paint ings, glassblowings, and other hand made items. And, better yet, if you could actually watch them being made that would be great. You, know, if you're going to have all that going on in one place at once, you might as well have some street performers too. A few actors and dancers, some musicians, maybe some puppets, maybe even a story teller or two. And with all that, food would come in handy, too. Maybe some local restaurants, or somebody who has great homemade recipes or something. Or both. Now that would really be great. On a Saturday afternoon like this, when the heat blankets the world, causing every thing underneath it to wallow in its stifling grip, about the only thing left to do is face it head on. There's no point in trying to stay home and hide from it, because air conditioning doesn't get cold enough to make a difference. Besides, it's such a beautiful day. So, wandering around downtown, looking for some kind of ethereal distraction, or some food, one can't help but hear the noise. It sounds like a crowd. People. Action. Perhaps excitement. What can it be? It's coming from the Lied Center's vacant hole in the ground, but it doesn't sound like construction work. Curios ity insists on a closer look. Just what in tarnation's going on here? The whole downtown side of campus is chock full o' stuff. Things and people are everywhere. Little signs all over proclaim this is the Flatwater Festival, and everybody else in the country seems to already know about it. Booths and displays line the street. All around are artists, craftsmen, artisans, and craftisans. They're making things right before your eyes. Things like paintings, portraits, pottery, woven baskets, blown glass, stuffed animals, sculp tures, woodwork, and a whole street or two full of stuff, some of which you don't really know how to de scribe. There seem to be some street performers just down the block. Dancers, singers, storytellers, and someone says there's a play going on inside. The smell of food is everywhere. Food itself is every where. This is too much to ask. It seems like the kind of family enter tainment that everyone in the family might actually like. Walking past the batik artist's booth, you suddenly remember your childhood. Do you really hear some one telling Brer Rabbit stories? Once again, curiosity has to find out. Later on, while eating some ice cream and watching a sculptor in a stained-glass mirror, you hear music coming from just down the block. They even have bands here! For a lazy, boring, summer afternoon, this is turning out pretty good. Night begins to edge in. You listen to windchimes, while looking at jewelry, while remembering those photographs, while an artist paints your picture. You adjust your stack of pottery, paintings, and your basket full of smaller toys, and try to remember if there could be anything you've missed. Maybe some more food before the final ghost stories of the evening. But what? Oriental? Mexican? Greek? Maybe a sandwich. Or doughnuts or brownies or cake? Pizza and fruit juice? Maybe one more look around. Well, it has been a long day, and a full one it has been indeed. The stories have been heard, the sights have been seen, and all kinds of things were looked at. Flatwater Festival, eh? Good idea. Let's have one every year. c i (? WE USE AND RECOMMEND PHUL MITCH rLL BYSTTtM"" FftOFESSIONM.
