Whether you're an experienced world-traveler or just a greenhorn, you'll find the IES to be the most compre hensive international travel resource center in town. It's open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is located at 1237 R Street. The IES is a non-profit organization that is composed of three branches: the Overseas Opportunities Center, the International Flight and Study Tour Programs, and the Foreign Student and Visiting Scholar Advising office. These three branches provide information concerning four subjects: travel, over seas academic opportunities, employ ment abroad, and cross-cultural pro grams in Lincoln. The information and services pro vided for travel is extensive. A "travel abroad" library contains books about travel in almost every nation in the world. Besides the library, the staff is available for travel advice. What the books can't or don't tell you, the staff may be able to give you their percep tions, often based on first-hand exper ience. Anyone can drop in to use the library, and if there are no advisers free to talk with while you are there, you can make an appointment. Will you need innoculations for where you will be going? What are the addresses of the nearest American consulates? Will you need a Mongolian visa if you are just passing through on the Trans-Siberian? The IES can help you in answering these questions. But they don't just answer questions. Even if you've decided on the where and when of your trip, you can take care of a lot of the details that will save you some writing and running around. The IES takes passport photos, sells Youth Hostel and Eurail passes, and can furnish you with International Student IDs. They even have money belts and sleep-sacks. If you're interested in combining pleasure with business, the OOC and the Flights and Study Tour Programs exist to enable students to work or study abroad. The overseas academic opportunities let you experience life in another country while earning college credit. There are a variety of programs, much like field trips, which are good A O VA.R.V I H L u -- IE . a L N i. a1?Ju 111 T)T N Q PIRlEmT Yj hjoJeJ j 0 E oT ; 1 s. Programs exist for many different majors, from architecture to business to anthropology, and of course, foreign languages such as Japanese, Chinese, German, French, and Spanish. The short-term programs do not always require knowledge of the country where you will be, though the longer-term programs usually require you to take some courses in the host nation's language. Information on the Study Abroad Programs, which last from one semester to a year, is available from the IES, though they are administered and coordinated by UNL's Institute for International Studies. If you're done with school (or ready to drop out) and would like to exper ience the romantic life of an expatriate, OOC can help you in many ways. There is a Wrork Abroad library with informa tion on how to get work permits, volunteer programs, internships, and programs for summer work abroad. In addition, there is a Peace Corps re cruiter who is periodically in the office. There are pamphlets available for employment and volunteer positions in Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, New Zealand, and Costa Rica. For those students whose busy schedule won't allow them to take any time off, and yet they want to have cross-cultural experiences, the IES can help you out in that department too. Much of their work involves familiariz ing foreign students to Lincoln and UNL, they sponsor programs that pair up American students with foreign students. You can meet with foreign students for a variety of reasons: to learn about their culture and way of life, tutor them in English, show them the campus and the city, or just to make a new friend. There are many existing, international student associa tions whose members can often be found at the IES as well. Another unique program is the International House, a residence hall on campus that pairs up one foreign student with one American student. These cross-cultural programs are good primers to travel abroad, and invaluable for making contacts for when you do actually go overseas. Some of the most exciting places in the world can be quite lonely if there's no one there whom you know. So if you're thinking of experiencing another culture, whether right here in Lincoln or across the ocean, don't pass up the IES. It's not a travel agency, but it's the next best thing. Maybe they can help you make the long-dreamed of trip abroad a reality. Cm ATMs ike S u 1 ,"' iTl Q A ?
