Problems with health, landlords, grades? offices can assist students By Jeanne Bourne Editor If a student needs assistance in any area he or she may find it in one of three offices paid for through student fees. The Student Legal Services, the Ombudsman and the Health Center can help students with any problem they may have. A full time legal office is available free of cost to all currently enrolled students said Shelly Stall, attorney. "We try to give students basic educa tion as to what their rights are and how the legal process works," she said. The student legal service gives legal advice about landlord-tenant disputes, consumer problems, misdemeanors and advice to victims, she said. They also represent students in court. Advice on uncontested divorces, that don't involve children or property and sexual har assment cases is also available, Stall said. The office doesn't get involved in business advice, such as for the entre preneurs, real estate or fee generating cases, when a person sues for damages in accidents, she said. The office will refer students to law offices in all these cases, she said. The Student Legal Service has been open since 1976, Stall said. It is funded by ASUN. The staff includes one full-time attorney and one three-quarters-time attorney, Stall said. They also have volunteer law clerks and paralegals, she said. The office keeps records of landlords to avoid. It is open all summer and appointments are always necessary, she said. The Health Center offers health care for common illnesses as well as spec ialty clinics such as: allergy, audiology, dermatology, orthopedics, mental health, surgery, emergency care and dietary counseling. All the doctors at the health center are certified physicians. Dr. Ralph Ewert, staff physician, said the center saves students money. Three-quarters of costs are covered by the student fees paid with tuition each semester. One-fourth of the costs are user fees, he said. Students may also purchase health insurance through the health center. If a student is not covered by his or her parents' insurance, it would be devestating not to be covered in case of serious illness or injury, he said. The health center also offers wellness programs such as: weight control, fit ness classes, stop smoking clinics, and contraceptive counseling. If a student has problems that are not covered by the Health Center or Student Legal Services, they can get help through the ombudsman's office. "This office is a good place to begin for any question one could come up with," said Faye Moulton, assistant ombudsman. The most common problem discussed is grades, she said. If the office can't help directly they will refer students to someone whp can, she said. TASTE the T. Lunch or dinner is a "Prime Time" to visit the Misty.
