BANDS from Page 16
Hardy Holm and Dave New
man The usual front porch croonin'
duo. Should make people who like rock
music and folk rock but wouldn't touch
an album less than 10 years old very
happy. Single "Ballad of Oral Roberts"
receivd airplay.
Tablerockers Zoo Bar house
band with bar owner Larry Boehmer on
bass. Usually features one of the great
est blues guitarists on the planet, Sean
Benjamin. He not only knows the moves,
he knows what concoction of guts, soul
and speen is behind the moves. Blues.
Very.
Psycles In the process of a pos
sible name change but they were for
merly a high-energy cover band with a
horn section who played anything from
James Brown to the Talking Heads.

something like that because that's a
respectable profession (She means they
make more money). But I remember
when I was a little kid and I asked her
why people keep going to school even
after they graduate and don't have to
anymore. She told me it's so they can
get the job they want.
Gee, now that I'm a college student
and out on my own and all, I wonder
what kind of wild, crazy, college student
fun I can get into, like in those movies.
Maybe me and -Ralph and Thistle and
those two girls in my class could get
some beer and go on a wild, crazy road
trip. I wish I had a car.
Boy, I've really been waiting for this.
I can eat pizza, stay up late, not brush
my teeth, I don't have to do my home
work if I don't want to, and I can go
anywhere I want without asking or
making up a story.
, There sure , seems to be a lot of
events and things going on here all the
time. This flyer I found on my desk has
a whole list of really fun, cool things to
do here on campus. It says that there's
an all-university dance Friday night at
the union. I guess that means everybody
will be there. Sure hope it's not too
crowded. Aw, darn, it says there's also a
Student Suicide seminar that same
night.
I wonder which one I should go to.
Maybe I better call Mom.
Confidentials Aka influenced of suburbanite off-beats who've mas-
cover band with too many members to tered a relatively "authentic" retro
comfortably fit into a basement. Eng- punk sound. Hipsters-catchy pop cov-
lish Beat, Elvis Costello.
Precautionz Pedestrian cover
band with a penchant for early '80s
punknew wave.
Hybrid A bright funk trio that's
a little too tight for its own good. Sort of
Red Hot Chili Peppers after a hard day
at the insurance office. Gobs of potential.
Justus Top 40Metal. Name
indicates marginal sense of humor.
Assault Ditto. Name indicates
lack of imagination. Mazir el Sharif
Lincoln Journal called their EP best of
last year, The band doesn't play much
but the album is moody New Order-ish
throb which either induces suicidal
impulses or a very cerebral form of
happy feet, depending on your tastes.

ers. A rew good originals, (jostello
again. Bangles.
Airstrike Walking advertise
ment for the local Spandex boutiques.
Thudding, barely proficient metal act
with pretensions to an arena career
that would have put Head East or early
REO Speedwagon to shame. Poses and
pomp galore. There's an album of well
produced original music available, car
rying the aerial assault metaphor about
20,000 leagues too far.
The Switch Popular reggaeska
band.
Metacrats Kurt Weill cabaret
style sophistication meets lead vocal
ist Mark Harper's scatalogicalgenital
fixations. Very different. Very talented.
Music not intended for drunk party
animals.
For Against Possibly the most
successful of Lincoln's alternative
bands. A heady mix of Savage Republic
moodiness and Jesus and Mary Chain
guitar noise. Their album "Echelons"
on California's Independent Projects
Records is doing well on the college
redio charts. All original material. By
turns boring and haunting.
Playground Very moody, static
guitar band. The name is highly ironic.
All originals.
Linoma Mashers Energetic
ska covers and originals. Lots of fun.
Cellophane Ceiling Heavy
post-punk with a great locally pro
duced album. Very loud and very good.
The lead singer John Wolff sounds like
Jeffrey Lee Pierce of the Gun Club and
the original music is first-rate.
Mother's Big Jazz Band Jazz
as in Duke Ellington and Benny Good
man, not as in John Coltrane. Usually
free and usually quite fine if big band
music is your gig.
Sweet Potato Band Fun, prof
icient bar band plays MOR country,
Buddy Holly, TV themes. Real popular
in bars west of the O Street overpass.
New High Flyers Country,
rcots rock purists distinguished by vir
tuoso musicianship and great taste in
songs. On the Fritz-Top 40. See Justin
Morgan, et. al.
Laurie McClain Folk singer
songwriter. Her own material is strong
enough to merit some national atten
tion in the singersongwriter genre.
Cornerstone Christian rock.
Trash Can .Alley Five-man
accapella group with ultr-tight harmo
nies. Cute stage show.
