Daily Nebraskan
Summer 1937
By Daily Nebraskan

Brain Hammer Vicious parody
band. A novelty metal act with a Spinal
Tap fixation, led by Cornhusker start
ing fullback Micah Heibel. Contrary to
Q-102 and the Daily Nebraskan calendar,
the band is not called Brian Hammer
and knows no one by that name.
Mannequin Beach Thrash
punk sensibility but not above a Van
Halen cover now and then. Defenders of
the New West-Share members with
Brain Hammer. Cowpunk without the
stigmas normally attached to that label.
Come to rockabilly by way of the
Ramones and can still keep old folks
two-stepping on the dance floor.
Justin Morgan Top 40, Heavy
Metal cover band. Pedestrian. Nice
hair. Cymbals by Zildjian.
Amethyst All-woman grass roots
happy-band. Tinges of reggae, blues
and American folk music. Socially con
scious, apparently.
Finnsters Grotesquely cheerful
pop cover ban! specializing in grotes
quely cheerful '60s music (i.e. Mon
kees, Tommy James, Neil Diamond,
bubblegum rock), with diversions into
'60s influenced '80s alternative pop
(R.E.M., et. al.). Some like-minded
originals. Pop, pop, pop.
13 Nightmares By their own
description, sonic folk. Sloppy, fren
zied guitar band with more than a few
nods toward the Replacements (sloppy,
frenzied). With a gravel-voiced lead
singer, a jangly guitarist, a strong level
bass holding the whole maelstrom to
gether and always a different drummer.
Mostly originals. Covers depend on the
band's erratic moods.

Brandy House band at the
Speakeasy. Basically white blues with
all the improvements and drawbacks
that label suggests. Good sound, musi
cal proficiency. Little soul.
Trout Mystery Thrash pop
that's endlessly hooky. Mostly originals
but some strange covers can come to
the surface if they're in the mood. Ever
hear a hardcore trashing of "What I
Like About You"? Didn't think so. Silly
name. Contagious. Powerful.
New Brass Guns Melodic,
well-crafted pop in the 10,000 Maniacs
vein. Vocalist Lori Allison manages to
make a very derivative sound distinc
tive by providing an intoxicating mix of
avant dissonance and '40s songbird
perfection.
Those Guys Accessible alter
native pop. Half originals, half covers.
Slick and tight. Definite crowd-pleasers.
The Loose Professional main
stream rock.
Splash Note-for-note Top 40
cover band. Been in Lincoln for 600
years.
Charlie Burton and the Hic
cups The granddaddy of local
music plays wild, funny rockabilly with
a twist of Hendrix. Four nationally
noted albums are available. The band
has an obsessed following in the area
but has not received nearly enough
attention from the outside world. One
of the few bands in the world you actu
ally believe when they say they've paid
their dues.
John Walker Nebraska Wes
leyan professor is kind of a more amia
ble version of Leon Redbone with a
slightly more exciting bottleneck gui
tar style.

Townsend in "Hollywood Shuffle."
Film is art at Sheldon
By Chris McCubbin
Staff Reporter
Not all movies are films, and not
all films are movies. A movie is a
movie when it's making money for a
studio. A film is a film when it's art.
That's why UNL's on-campus thea
tre is called The Sheldon Film Thea
tre. It's not here to provide students
with a couple hours of escapism.
The Sheldon is here to show the
UNL community the state of the art
of cinema.
The Sheldon Film Theatre is locat
ed in the Sheldon Memorial Art
Gallery. The 294 set theatre opened
in 1973.
"The theatre shows films that
would not ordinarily be seen here in
Lincoln." He said the Sheldon spe
cializes in American independent
films films not made by the big
Hollywood studios, and foreign films,"
said Dan Ladely, director of the
Sheldon Film Theatre.
Animation is the recurring theme
at Sheldon this summer, with Will
Vinton's 'Festival of Claymation"
July 16 through 19 and "The 19th
International Tournee of Animation,"
Aug. 20 through Aug. 23. Five pro
grams of animated and live-action
shorts for children and adults will
be shown at the Flatwater Festival,
June 19 through 21.
That same week documentary
filmmaker Robert Mugge will be
present at a retrospective of his
films, which profile popular musi
cians. "Hollywood Shuffle," produced
by, directed by and starring Robert
Townsend, plays June 25 through
28. About this film Siskel and Ebert
said, "Eddie Murphy, move over
Robert Townsend has arrived."
"Working Girls," by Lizzie Borden,
is the saga of a single shift at a
Manhattan brothel. It will show
from July 9 to July 12. Also examin
ing '80s sexuality from a feminist
perspective is Bette Gordon's "Var
iety," showing from Aug. 13 to 16.
Eleven features in all will be
shown for the Sheldon's summer
schedule.
Two filmmakers are scheduled to
appear at the Sheldon this fall. D. A.
Pennebaker is a key figure in the
history of the documentary film.
Pennebaker is co-inventor of hand
held 16 millimeter sound and camera,
which revolutionized documentary
filmmaking.
Pennebaker is best known for his
groundbreaking rock 'n' roll films
like "Monterrey Pop," and "Don't
Look Back," a record of Bob Dylan
on a concert tour of Great Britain.
Another documentary filmmaker,
Michael Blackwood, will appear at
Sheldon in conjunction with a ser
ies of his architectural films.
Admission to the Sheldon is usu
ally $4 for both students and the
public.
