Thursday, April 23, 1937 Page 14 Daily Nebraskan Federico, pitchers lift NU By Steve Sipple Staff Reporter A three-hit pitching performance and the end of a hitting slump carried Nebraska to a 10-2 victory and a dou bleheader sweep over Northwest Mis souri State Wednesday at Buck Beltzer Field. Joe Federico, whose .250 batting average was the lowest on the Huskers' roster, smacked a three-run double in a four-run sixth inning. He finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBIs. John Lepley and Pat Leinen com bined to shut down the Bearcats to raise Nebraska's record to 30-10. Northwest Missouri State dropped to 20-20. Nebraska's four-run sixth inning fol lowed a three-run fifth to put the game out of reach. Ken Ramos' single, extending his hitting steak to 1 4 games, led off the inning. After John Franklin singled and Jeff Taylor was hit by a pitch, the Bearcats replaced reliever Steve Nelson with Mark Roggy. Federico greeted Roggy with his double and eventually scored on Mark Kister's single. Lepley earned the victory, raising his record to 4-1. Monte Johnson got the loss in his first decision of the season. In the first game, McGraw Milhaven won his second straight decision, going 7. 1 strong innings in Nebraska's 7-4 vic tory. Phil Uoguen, nis torkbaii Darning the Bearcats, came on in the eighth and struck out all five batters he faced in picking up his first save. Jeff Taylor, starting in place of Fede rico at designated-hitter, went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. His two-run single to right was the big blow in Nebraska's four-run third inning. Tim Wolters (3-2) got the loss in the first game, giving up five runs and five hits in four innings. Coach John Sanders said his club, ranked No. 18 in the ESPNCollegiate Baseball poll, needed the victories for momentum heading into this weekend's showdown with No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State. Huskers to face top-ranked OSU By Tim Hartmann Staff Reporter A four-game series at Oklahoma State beginning Friday will provide the Nebraska baseball team with its next big test of the season, Coach John Sanders said. Oklahoma State, 40-4 overall (not including a game yesterday with Texas Western) and 8-1 in Big Eight Conference play, is ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPN, but suffered a 9-8 loss to No. 5-ranked Arkansas Tuesday. Sanders said that Oklahoma State's field is a hitter's park. "They are going to score some runs and we are going to score some runs," Sanders said. "Their park is very conducive to scoring runs." The Cowboys return 17 letter winners from last year's 56-15 team, which finished fourth in the College World Series in Omaha. They also return three all Big Eight players from last season: first baseman Jimmy Barragan, designated hitter Jim Ifland and third baseman Robin Ventura. Three Cowboys are batting over .400. Outfielder Anthony Blackmon leads the team in hitting with a .444 batting average, and Ifland and Ventura are second and third. Ifland if hitting .436 with 10 home runs and 60 runs batted in, and Ventura is hitting .403 with 15 home runs and 71 RBIs. Facing a highly ranked opponent is nothing new this season for Ne braska. Two weeks ago, the Corn huskers swept a four-game series from Oklahoma, the No. 4-ranked team in the country at the time. Sanders said the victories over Oklahoma will help the team this weekend. Nebraska is 30-8 overall and 8-0 in the Big Eight. Seven Huskers are hitting over .300; Mark Kister leads the way with a .383 average. Todd Bunge is next at .376, and Ken Ramos is right behind at .372. Ron Crowe and Joe Federico lead the team in home runs with eight each. Two Oklahoma State football play ers went out for baseball this spring. Quarterback Mike Gundy played infield for the cowboys but quit the team when spring football started. Wide receiver Hart Lee Dykes pitches for Oklahoma State and may pitch this weekend. Dykes, an all Big Eight selection in football, is 2-0 on the season with a 5.43 earned run aver age. , .' Phil Goguen, Rock Johnson, John Lepley and John Kohli will be the starting pitchers for Nebraska, Sanders said. - i . "The rotation is not set, but those are the four we will be using," he said.
