Coritstock festival brings
Johnny Reno into light

So you missed Woodstock. You missed
LiveAid. You know FarmAid III is com
ing, but you can't wait that long. You
want to see some bands, and you want
to see them outside in this lovely
spring weather. Well, have no fear,
Cornstock is here!
The ever-popular Johnny Reno and
the Sax Maniacs will headline the
event. Johnny's live show has reached
near-legendary proportions in these
parts, what with all the mileage he's
racked up while strolling down the
Zoo's bar. Who knows what'll happen
when they get out from the smoky con
fines and into the sunlight..
Opening up will be South Dakota
based band Ivory. No one seems to
know much about these fellers, but
rumor has it they played at Charles
Lieurance's prom once. Ivory will be
followed by Lincoln's own Confiden
tials. This will be Cornstock's 17th year,
and once again it's put on and paid for
by UPC East. That's right, it's free.
All of this begins at 12:30 Friday
afternoon, and winds up around 5:30
p.m. It all happens on the East Campus
meadow behind Filley Hall, where the
Dairy Store is. It could be a hot day, so
coolers (no, of pop) are welcome.
Glasses will be provided. If it's not a
hot day, and it rains, go to the Nebraska
Union at the same time.

Howell Tfieatre reworks 'Midsummer Night 's Dream 1

It takes more than a bunch of
people running around on stage to
make a good production. The direc
tor, actors, scenic designers and
lighting crew play important, inter
dependent roles. When all these
elements mesh, the production
achieves some form of success. Such
is the case with "A Midsummer
Night's Dream" at Howell Theatre.

Director Gavin Cameron-Webb
wisely stayed away from trying to
rehash this comedy using the
standard formula. Instead, he pro
duced a stylistic version of this
classic using a quasi-contemporary
approach. The direction of the play
runs on a high energy wave that is
rarely seen in a Shakespeare play.
Thomas Umfrid's scenic design
remained consistent with the styl
ized interpretation. Intricate set
devices captured the essence of the
enchanted forest.
Janice Stauffer's costume designs
were terrific. Oberon and Puck, the
male fairies, seemed to have jumped
right out of a comic book with their
macho green tights.
Morten Hansen and Susan Olt-,
manns gave great double perfor
mances. Hansen could have done a
little more to separate his two char
acters, but Oltmann, through care
ful use of facial expressions and
body movements, effectively differ
entiated between Hippolyta and

with their hissing and strange
movements that they didn't need
dialogue to hold my attention. Steve
Lorenzo was creepy as Puck and
deserves some credit for his mobil
ity on the steep stage. His quirky,
quick movements gave Puck that
persona of a mischievous imp. The
scene-stealer award goes to Jay
Thornton for his humorous scene as
Thisbe in the interlude.
"A Midsummer Night's Dream"
plays at the Howell Theatre in the
Temple Building through May 2.
Tickets are $6 for students and are
worth the price. For $2 more than a
movie, you can have a cultural and
entertaining evening.

Digging," airing Wednesday at 8:30
p.m. on the Nebraska ETV Network.
The 30-minute program takes view
ers to displays at UNL's Morrill Hall
and its hands-on encounter center for
children, as well as the museum's
research facilities at UNL's Nebraska
Hall, which houses more than 3 12
million fossil specimens.
A number of NU staff are interviewed
about the museum's collection, includ
ing Hugh H. Genoways, director of the
museum; Dr. Robert M. Hunt, Jr., cura
tor of vertebrate paleontology; Dr.
Michael Voorhies, curator and coordi
nator of vertebrate paleontology; Dr.
Patricia Freeman, curator of zoology;
Dr. Brett C. Ratcliffe, curator of insects;
and Mary Pritchard, curator of parasi
tology. "The State Museum: Still Digging"
is a production of the UNL Television
sports and special events unit and is
funded in part by Nebraskans for Pub
lic Television, Inc. Steve Alvis is pro
ducer of the program, Barb Hanson is
unit director, and John Beck is video

school law to a panel of attorneys on
"Nebraskans Ask: Ask a Lawyer" airing
Thursday at 9:30 p.m. on NETV.
Moderator of the 30-minute live pro
gram is Omaha attorney John Brown
rigg, who will introduce the topic and
the panelists who will answer ques
tions. The panel will be comprised of
three Nebraska attorneys from around
the state.
"Nebraska Ask: Ask a Lawyer" is a
production of the Nebraska projects
unit of UNL Television, with funding
support from the Nebraska State Bar
Association.
