MJ loses despite mEy
By Steve Sipple
Staff Reporter
Mike Sharabaugh's grand-slam home
run and Pete Schmidt's ninth-inning,
game-winning single led Oral Roberts
to a 9-7 victory against Nebraska Sat
urday and a sweep of a two-game series
at Buck Beltzer Field.
Oral Roberts also won Friday, 10-9.
On Saturday, 1,023 people watched
Nebraska rally in the seventh and
eighth innings to tie the game 7-7
before Schmidt's single off Dale Kistai
tis led to Adam Casillas's score. Casil
las had doubled off of Phil Goguen to
open the ninth.
Erratic pitching continued to plague
the Cornhuskers. Their pitchers walked
Oral Roberts' first batter in the fourth,
fifth, sixth and seventh innings, giving
the Titans seven runs. Starter John
Kohli and relivers Goguen and Steve
Spurgeon combined to walk 10 batters.
Wichita State drew 20 walks against
Nebraska Wednesday night in its 21-4
victory.
Coach John Sanders said the inning
opening walks were costly.
"For every 10 hitters you walk, over
half will score," he said. "Statistics
show it. It's not surprising they got
nine runs."
Even though Husker pitching has
given up 40 runs and 34 walks in the
past three outings, Sanders said the
blame for the three-game skid should
not be cast on his pitching staff.
"The obvious things show in the
pitching," he said, "but the focus can't
be strictly on pitching. We have to do
the little things to score runs, and we
didn't do them.
"We'll get ourselves together real
quick."
It looked as though the Huskers
were on their way to getting it together
when they scored three runs in the
seventh and eight innings.
After Shambaugh's grand slam in
the top of the seventh making the score
7-1, the Huskers struck back in the
bottom half of the inning.
Third baseman Ron Crowe drew a
leadoff walk and catcher Tim Petten-
gill singled him to third. Ken Sirak's
grounder forced Pettengill out at second,
but scored Crowe.
After second baseman Bruce Wobken
singled, Ken Ramos' sacrifice bunt
moved Wobken to second and Sirak to
third. Left fielder John Franklin then
lined a two-run single to right, his third
hit of the day.
Nebraska tied the game in the eighth
inning. Crowe singled with one out and
after Pettengill flied out to right, Sirak
followed with a RBI double. Wobken
then pounded his second homer of the
year over the right center-field fence, a
two-run blast tying the game 7-7.
But Schmidt singled in Casillas in
the top of the ninth inning with the
winning run.
Phil Goguen (6-1) caused the loss for
Nebraska. The righthander had trouble
controlling his forkball, walking five in
two and two-thirds innings. He gave up
five runs and three hits.
Kyle Irvin won his second consecu
tive game in relief against the Huskers.
He replaced Brad Harvick with two out
in the eighth inning after Wobken's
homer. After walking Ramos, he retired
the Huskers in the ninth inning to raise
his record to 8-3.
Friday, Nebraska entered the bot
tom of the ninth inning trailing 10-8.
Pettengill opened the inning with a
single off Irvin, who relieved starter
Greg Oram in the eighth. After Wobken
and Sirak popped out, Limon chopped
a single over third baseman Bob Zup
cic's head, moving pinch-runner Jarron
Bradley to second. A double by Ramos
scored Bradley, and the tying and win
ning runs were aboard with Nebraska's
leading hitter, Todd Bunge, due up.
But Titan coach Gary Vaught elected
to walk Bunge intentionally and pitch
to designated hitter Joe Federico.
Federico, whose batting average has
dropped to .255, was retired on a fly
ball to left to end the game.
Kistaitis (3-2) took the loss in relief
of starter Rocky Johnson.
Vaught, Kansas State's coach last
year, said it was satisfying to beat his
former Big Eight nemesis.

Softball team leads Big 8
Cyclones fall to NU's talent
By Rich Cooper
Staff Reporter
Nebraska's softball team extended
its record to 28-9 after sweeping Iowa
State in a doubleheader Saturday. The
No. 4-ranked Huskers won the first
game 10-2 and the second game 2-0
behind the pitching of Donna Deardorff
and hitting of Jane Kremer.
With the win, the Huskers, 4-2 in the
Big Eight Conference, moved into first
place in conference standings and
extended their winning streak to five.
Nebraska coach Ron Wolforth said
some things that appeared in the Iowa
media during the week fired up his
team.
"They said they were going to sweep
us, and our kids kind of took that a
little personally," Wolforth said. "It
was like waking up the sleeping dog,
and that's exactly what they did."
In the first game, Nebraska struck
quickly. Leeanna Miles reached first
base on a throwing error by a Cyclone
infielder. After Margie Ogrodowicz and
Kremer drew walks, Lori Richins.drilled
a pitch into left field where Cyclone
outfielder Jenny Condon dropped the
ball, allowing Miles and Ogrodowicz to
score and givng the Huskers a 2-0 lead.
The Cyclones tied the game in the
bottom of the third inning when Con
don hit a two-run home run over the
right centerfield fence. It was the first
time in 54 13 innings that an earned
run had been scored off Sippel.
The Huskers came back in the fourth
inning with two runs when Jill Rishel
and Amy Love scored on Sippel's single
to left field. In the fifth inning, Nebraska
added two more runs on singles by Sip
pel and Ruth Chatwin. In the sixth
inning Kremer hit her third home run
of the season, a two-run shot, over the
centerfield fence to give Nebraska the
10-2 victory.
In the nightcap, Nebraska scored
one run in the first inning and another
in the second to pull out its third vic
tory in a row against the Cyclones this
spring. Deardorff had a career-high 12
strikeouts to push her record to 11-4.
Wolforth was pleased by the sweep
over the Cyclones.
"We've put five really good games
together, and right now we have the
momentum going," Wolforth said.
"Playing at home really helped us out a
lot."
