AStemoozi Honors Bay convocation
to encomrage more participation
By Linda Holmes
Staff Reporter
The annual Honors Day convocation
and reception will be Friday afternoon
this year so that more people will be
able to attend, officials say.
The Honors Day convocation has
been in the morning and preceded by a
reception in previous years.
Chancellor Martin Massengale said
in a letter to the faculty that the time
change will "minimize the impact on
class schedules and encourage greater
participation by both faculty and stu
dents." He said 77 percent of UNL students
finish their classes by 2 p.m. on Friday
and that "an afternoon convocation
will also allow more parents to attend
the event without the necessity of
overnight lodging."
This year's reception will follow the
convocation.
Rex Reckewey, Honors Convocation
Committee chairman said the 1,943
undergraduate students and profes
sional students in the colleges of law
and dentistry honored at the convoca
tion will receive a pin.
The pins, paid for by the Alumni
Association, will be distributed at the
reception.
The convocation begins at 2:30 p.m.
on the basketball court of the Bob
Devaney Sports Center. The reception
will be at 4 p.m. on the sports-center
track.
Each college will have its own booth
at the convocation, and the deans or
associate deans of each college will
present awards to their students.
Reckewey said each college will
provide a visual display "emphasizing
some aspects of the college's program."
The Teachers College gallery, for
example, will include a display of
distinguished past graduates, he said.
A poster display of the university's
distinguished professors also will be
exhibited.
"It's hoped that the respective col
leges will add other displays of interest
to students and parents," he said.
Recekwey, in his fifth year on the
committee, said he thinks this year's
program should generate greater in
terest and involvement among faculty,
students and parents.
"The especially designed lapelblouse
pins will provide each student being
honored with an appropriate symbol of
the honor he or she has received one
that students can wear proudly in
recognition of their achievements," he
said.

30 years of aspirin and advice
By Kim Beavers
Staff Reporter
The strain of the Asian flu epidemic
in 1957 prompted university officials to
form the nation's first student health
aide program. Friday University Health
Center officials celebrated the pro
gram's 30th anniversary.
Margaret Pavelka, program coordi
nator, said the program was the first
documented attempt at a U.S. univer
sity to organize a program where stu
dents could care for other students on
campus. Other schools soon followed
UNL's lead and began similar pro
grams, she said.
"We are still contacted by colleges
who want to update their programs and
want to know how our program is
today," Pavelka said. "Colleges who
have no student peer health programs
often ask for assistance in developing a
program like ours at the University of
Nebraska."
Health aides must be students at
UNL and live in a Greek house or resi
dence hall. Health aides attend a man
datory class once a week which is
worth two credit hours. During the
class, the health aides complete one
project requirement and receive CPR
and first-aid certifications. They earn
$8 a week.
Besides helping care for students
who are ill, health aides provide a
communication link with the health
center. Aides can refer students with
serious illnesses or health problems to
other community services or resources
if the problem is beyond the health
center's resources. Health aides pro
vide health-education programs and
health information in residence halls
and Greek houses, or example, they
are responsible for the "health tip"
sheets often found posted on bathroom
stalls in student housing.
Students who have been health aides
also can assist as program coordinators.
Samantha Saylor is a health aide in
Love Hall in the Neihardt Residence
Center.
"It's a good feeling knowing that you
can help people when you're a health
aide," Saylor said.
Health aides may dispense only non
prescription medicine in the health
aide kit.
Yost hopes for biotechnology grant
GRAD from Page 1
Sagar is working with several other
professors and graduate students on
finding a way to control spider mites in
hot weather so that corn growers' crops
won't be threatened, Sagar said.
Sagar said the grant for the research
project will expire Oct. 1. The original
grant was for $40,000 a year for two
years.
Tom Holtzer, associate professor of
entomology, said that while the research
project has progressed, he'd like to
have the grant for one more year.
Yost said UNL is considering a fed
eral grant that would give $500,000 to
UNL to develop a biotechnology research
lab. UNL would have to match the grant
with $500,000.
He said he hopes UNL takes the
grant.
