Monday, March 16, 1987 Daily Nebraskan Page 9 Spout & Women gymnast finish Big 8 By Rich Cooper Staff Reporter The Nebraska women's gymnastics team scored a Bob Devaney Sports Cen ter record by defeating Missouri 187.05 to 177.65 in its last home meet of the season Friday night. Nebraska, which finished its regular season undefeated in Big Eight Confer ence competition was led by sopho mores Jeaneane Smith and Crystal . Walton Savage. Smith finished first in the all around and tied her career best with a 37.75. Savage finished second with a 37.45. Nebraska coach Rick Walton said he was happy with the team's performance but thought it could have scored a 188. "The team hasn't hit a 188 yet, and we hoped tonight to go six for six in all four events, but fell a little short in the floor exercise," Walton said. "We had a good pace to go 188 after the first three events, but once again floor (exer I - s i it i i -' ' 1,1 ' ' J . The Huskers set two school records on vault and balance beam. On vault, Savage and Smith both scored 9.55. Freshmen Tami Bair and Racine Smith scored 9.5 and 9.4, to give Nebraska a 47.45. That broke the school record by five-tenths of a point. On the balance beam Smith scored a 9.55 and three other Huskers scored 9.3 to give a total 46.70, which set a new Sports Center record. Walton said the 187 should bring Nebraska's average up a few tenths of a point, which will be important for their seeding in the Region 5 meet on April 11 in Tempe, Ariz. Walton said he thinks the region is the toughest in the nation because every team in the region has an average of about 185. "We have to continue to get that average up because everybody else has just as high an average as we do," Wal ton said. "If we can go into the region meet seeded second or third, then we would draw bye in the first rotation, which is very important for us." Walton said the next few meets of the season will be tough because every meet will be against a top-20 team. He said the freshmen on the team are beginning to show some maturity in the meets. Walton said he was happy with the performance of freshman Michelle Bry ant, who competed in the all-around for the first time in her career. Bryant, from Blue Springs, Mo., scored 36.20. She scored 9.3 on vault and 9.3 on balance beam but fell on the uneven bars and floor exercise. Bryant tied for third place in the all-around with Mis souri's Kristi Leslie. , '' Next weekend the men's and women's it V. aw Tigers, undefeated. teams will travel to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes in a double dual meet. The women's team has split both pre vious meetings with the Buckeyes. Wal ton said the meet at Ohio State will be "very tough" because Ohio State is about the same caliber as Nebraska. Walton said he hopes both teams will be hot so they can score high and increase their averages. He said he'll give his team a couple of days off to let them catch up in school and rest. After Allen the meet against Ohio State, he said, the Huskers will compete at the Big Eight Conference Championships in Columbia, Mo., on March 27. "We maybe the Big Eight regular season champions, but we still have one more meet to compete in that will decide if we are the conference cham pions," Walton said. "Oklahoma has won the championship the last three years in a row, and I'm sure they're going to give us a fight. They don't want to give up that trophy to us." v 4 i Ward WHSiamaDaily Nebraskan ! - - " 1 .-. i. J. ...i.u . I t :4' 0 r- : i ):.. .ir t:) c :. r.:y:. t-r.;:. -r: ,;Ir; i? t: c:.'.. c;..I .
