Gyminiaots to me
By Rich Cooper
The Nebraska women's gymnastics
team will compete in its last home
meet of the season Friday night when it
takes on Missouri at the Bob Devaney
Sports Center at 7.
The Cornhuskers, ranked No. 9 by
the Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches, is
undefeated in Big Eight Conference
dual competition. Nebraska has the
fifth-highest team average in the nation:
Last weekend, Nebraska set two new
records against Iowa State. The Huskers
set a new sports-center record with a
185.70 team score, and a new school
record in the uneven bars, 47.0.
Nebraska coach Rick Walton said he
hopes the team can put together its
best home meet of the season.
"We would like to set another team
scoring record this weekend," Walton
said. "We would like to match the 187.
that we scored at Oklahoma about a
month ago, and if we put together a
complete meet, then we will score that

though the Huskers defeated the Tig

season for this team. Nebraska scored a

meet," Walton said. "The meet was

This season, spring football practice
runs from March 30 to April 25. This
means football players can participate
only in the Dakota Relays, Big Eight
Championships and NCAA Champion
ships in the outdoor track season.
Assistant coach Mark Devenney said
he thought the proposed indoor prac
tice field in the rec center might help
the track team because spring football
might begin earlier.
"A lot of schools don't have spring
football for their track athletes," he
said. "Most of the top track schools
have many football players running
track, like Tennessee, USC, UCLA, Ala
bama and Texas."
Assistant track coach Jay Dirksen
said spring football hurts track at
"Southern schools hold spring foot
ball in February or March, but we're not
done until nearly the end of school,"
Dirksen said. "We also have several
football players who are good athletes
who don't come out for track because
it's just too much to handle."

Michelle Bryant in the all-around
against Missouri. Last weekend against
Iowa State, Bryant had her best meet of
the season, Walton said. She scored an
average of 9.3 on the three events she
competed in. On the uneven bars she

and on floor exercise, 9.25. Walton said
that if she can score above a 9.2 on the
vault against Missouri, she should score
more than 37 in the all-around.
Walton said throughout most of the
season, he hasn't had to use more than
two all-arounders, because they have
been scoring above 37.
Nebraska had two football players
place in the 1987 Big Eight Indoor
Championships. Kent Wells finished
second in the shot put, and Terry
Rodgers was sixth in the 60-yard dash.
Keith Jones won the 60-yard dash in the
1985 Big Eight Indoor meet, and Von
Sheppard finished second in the long
jump in the 1985 and 1986 Big Eight

"In the past we relied more on those
guys for our sprinters, but now we have
been recruiting more sprinters," Dirksen
said. "We really appreciate those guys
coming out, but we know we can't rely
on them entirely because of spring
football. We feel that track is helpful

Last weekend against the Cyclones,
Crystal Savage won the all-around with
a 37.6, and Jeaneane Smith finished
second with a 37.2. Walton said he
thinks both gymnasts are capable of
scoring above 38 in the all-around.
"The Missouri meet will be the per
fect opportunity for our team to score
its highest score of the season," Walton
said. "I really would like to see them go
six for six on all four events, and they
know they can do it."
The men's team will travel to Min

"More and more, football teams are
recruiting kids who can help out track
and vice versa," Devenney said. "Most
kids who did both said that track really
helped them. Track helps those ath
letes stay competitive. Guys like Willie
Gault, Johnny "Lamb" Jones, O.J.
Simpson, Joe Morris and Anthony Han
cock all ran track in college and are
now in the NFL."
Devenney said track and football
coaches don't recruit together, but
they help each other.
"If the football coaches are recruit
ing someone who is a good sprinter and
we don't know about them, they let me
know," Devenney said. "If we find a
track man who is also a football player,
we let them know. (Coach Tom) Osborne
is very helpful."

Ilusker men's coach Francis Allen
said last weekend Nebraska proved to
Oklahoma that they're the better team.
"We showed Oklahoma that we are
the more talented team and that if they
are going to beat us, they are going to
have to be hot and we're going to have
to be cold," Allen said. "Oklahoma was
thinking about us and not about their

Ail-American Collin Godkin, whose
highest all-around score this season is

Wisconsin is 7-6 this season in dual
