Phil Lieberher, Steve Gewecke and Dale Kistaitis combined on a one-hitter to lead the Huskers in the second game. Lieberher, in his first start of the year, worked the first five innings and gave up the only Loper hit, a fourth inning double by Mark Kubik, and striking out five. Gewecke, a junior college transfer: from Arcadia, Calif., pitched the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. He gave up no hits and struck out four in his first appearance. Kistaitis struck out the side in the ninth. Nebraska coach John Sanders was pleased with Sunday's pitching. "The pitchers did a nice job," he said. "It was an intelligent perfor mance." Kearney State starter Blake Mahnke made it look like the game would be a pitcher's duel until the Huskers' fourth-run fifth inning. Crowe walked to open the inning and scored on catcher Tim Pettengiil's double. Petten gill moved to third on a passed ball and scored when shortstop Ken Sirak's grounder went through the legs of second baseman Mark Lang. Bruce Wobken sacrified Sirak to second and Ken Ramos struck out before Bunge hit a two-run double into left field. The Husker added a pair of runs in the sixth. With runners on first and third and one out, Dan Stein entered the game and retired Pettengill on a slow roller to the mound, but hit the next batter, John Franklin, with a pitch to load the bases. Sirak then hit a slow roller between the mound and first base to drive in a run. Another infield single by Wobken scored first-basemen Mark Kister, who had reached on Lang's third error of the day. The Huskers closed the scoring with a single run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. On Saturday, about 500 fans basked in the sun to watch a Husker power display. Nebraska scored 42 runs in its first two games against Northwest Missouri State and continued the offensive production against the Ante lopes. Crowe began the assault with a two-run homer over the left-center field fence in a four-run first inning. He added a solo shot in the Husker's four run seventh. He has three on the year. In the second, after Sirak walked and Vince Limon popped out on a bunt to the shortstop, Wobken hit Mark Croot's 3-2 pitch over the right field fence for a two-run homer. After a two-run third, the Huskers added four more in the fourth, with two coming on Bunge's homer to center field. Ramos and Sirak had RBI singles in the inning. The Huskers closed their scoring with a four-run seventh, with the big blows being Bunge's two-run homer and Crowe's solo shot. Phil Goguen earned the victory by pitching six innings and giving up six runs, including two earned. He walked four and struck out seven. John Kohli relieved him to start the seventh and gave up three runs, all earned.
