them of fancy to leave only plausible
historical events, and then searched
for a real person whose life met
those criteria.
This is not conventional histori

flam job, Ashe always lets us know
when he's breaking the rules and
why. And even with its irregularities
taken into account, his argument
still stands remarkably well.
Ashe painstakingly constructs his
argument so that we are not told
who his historical Arthur is until
more than halfway through the book.

"The Discovery of King Arthur"
holds all the fascination of a well
constructed whodunit.

devoted to how Arthur's myth grew,
how we came to view him as we do
and why he holds such an important
place in our collective soul.
"The Discovery of King Arthur" is
more than an entertaining exercise
in popular history, it is a revealing
glimpse into why and how we are

Award, a one-, two- or three-person
exhibition with a $60 stipend, and
Entry Fee Awards, the amount to depend
