Wednesday, February 25, 1987 Daily Nebraskan Pago 7 Air O-mmrdl teaimMg im Mmcta By Atsuko Ohara Staff Reporter Although many Nebraska National Air guardsmen may consider their Hon duran training in mid-April to be some thing like a spring break, deployment to a controversial area is causing objec tions from at least one peace-movement organizer. The Nebraska National Air Guard Civil Engineering Squadron will train for two weeks beginning April 18 at Palmerol Air Base, 45 miles from El Salvador and 75 miles from Nicaragua, both embroiled in civil war. The U.S. backed Contras are based along the southern border. Col. Kenneth King, commander of the 155th Base Engineering Squadron, said the guardsmen will practice elec trical wiring and construction- works that they would do if called to war. He said he doesn't think this deployment is particularly special. "It's kind of neat that we're going out of country" to train, he said. Eut Larry Zink, state coordinator of Nebraskans for Peace, said he is con cerned with the deployment to Central America. . The administration is "getting around Congress objection" to its Nicaraguan policy by "Using the National Guard by moving the site to Central America and actually training there," Zink said. Although the deployment is called a training, Zink said, "it is a part of a process of construction of superstruc ture" for the base. While polls show American citizens don't support the government's policy, the United States has built up five or six major bases in Honduras, he said. However, Zink said he knew the Nebraska Guard has no choice of the training site. The Guard was under the governor's control, Zink said, because historically it was needed for state emergencies like blizzards, crowd control and backup for the military forces in wartime. Last year, however, the governor's veto power was removed, he said. "It is a veiy dangerous change" to lose civilian control over military power, he said. Regarding who is in charge of the National Guard, King said, "I'll leave the question to politicians." "Whatever the governor or the presi dent of the U.S. chooses to work out the laws of our country is fine with me," King said. "I'm a soldier. I'll do my job that I'm told to do." As for security, King said he feels no danger. "We have been told to stay exactly on this base. We're not going to be in the (Contra's) area We're really not concerned with what they are doing there," he said. Reflecting the commander's view, young guardsmen are looking forward to the trainig without fear. Mike Kaup, a UNL student among about 55 Air Guardsmen who are going to Honduras, said, "I don't feel any thing heroic" about going to Honduras, but "I'll be more confident in support ing the National Guard" after the training. Kaup, a senior mechanized agricul ture major from Genoa, said, 'This is a great opportunity, ... I'm looking for ward to the training and everything I'll learn." "I'm excited about going because I've never been out of the U.S.," he said. Mark Heithoff, a sophomore at South east Community College, said, "It's kind of fun just to travel to see some countries." Zink warned that the administration is trying to prepare for war in Hondu ras. The National Guard is carrying out the administration's policy, he said. in n RY BOARD, cont.
