Page 6 Wednesday, February 25, 1987 Daily Nebraskan Speaker: extremists rejected by farmers By Kirk Zebolsky Staff Reporter Most Nebraska farmers blame them selves if they have financial troubles and resist recruiting efforts of extrem ist groups that blame government and the international banking community for the farm depression, said a UNL professor Monday at a seminar in the East Union. Jack Kay, associate professor of speech communication, is evaluating 150 hours of taped discussions with 100 farmers, said farmers acknowledge contact with members of the groups but believe that "a lot of their ideas are just not true," and quickly repudiate them. The groups, which also advocate white supremacy, are trying to increase their numbers by taking advantage of failing farmers, Kay said. But in the last 2 12 years Nebraska farmers have been "very, very resist ant" to the groups, Kay said, because more farmers buy into the metaphor "farming is a business" and blame only themselves for financial problems. The "Farmer-as-a-businessperson" metaphor was created by the govern ment about 15 years ago, Kay said, when farmers were recommended through agricultural extension offices and farmers' cooperatives as good bus iness people. Books and literature have perpetuated the metaphor, he said. The problem with farmers blaming only themselves is that they resist not only extremism but all outside help, including church groups, and face their problems alone, Kay said. Farmers who sympathize with the extremist groups think in terms of the metaphor "farming as embodied as a cultural heritage," Kay said, and believe someone "is trying to take my life, money and heritage." Arthur Kirk, the Cairo farmer who was shot by state patrolmen in a stand off over foreclosure papers, is now seen as a martyr to some extremists, Kay said. Thirty percent of the farmers inter viewed last summer claimed they were in financial distress, and 70 percent said they were "OK or prospering," Kay said. The interviewing was funded by a grant from the UNL Research Council. On his own, Kay visited last year's "world congress" a meeting of 40 extremist leaders in Hayden Lake, Idaho. Kay said that until experiencing the activities of the extremists, he didn't think they seriously believed the ideas they advocated. He said he was sur prised to find that they are "incredibly sincere." Active members number about 1,500 nationwide and they have up to 300,000 sympathizers, according to a Kansas City researcher who has made the extremists his life's study. Kay said the extremists have more influence among farmers in the South and Pacific Northwest. Kay said he is more worried about their inflience among students than among farmers UlTLc! jr.!-! - m ah. ti ' ; ": .:-t: . r : it : , ( : : ' (f .. i, ,! i ;,;::! ; t ;i t v .. - - , - , y -. v-:. u , : ,, ,, i.j h ,t- 4 f t ' 1 I , 4 ....
