Schlesinger received a 9.5 for his vault. NU gymnasts upset No. 1 rains By Rich Cooper Staff Reporter Everything went right for the Ne braska men's gymnastics team Sunday night as the Cornhuskers defeated top ranked UCLA 283.80 to 278.65. Nebraska, ranked fourth, swept the first three places in the all-around as Tom Schlesinger scored a career-high 57.80. Kevin Davis finished second with a 57.55 and Neil Palmer finished third with a 57.25. Nebraska coach Francis Allen said he was pleased with Nebraska's per formance. The Huskers swept every event from the Bruins. "We predicted coming into this meet that we would have to score at least a 47 in every event to beat them," Allen said. "To tell you the truth I think UCLA came in here thinking that they would have no problem beating us." In the first rotation, the Huskers got off to a fast start as Davis scored a 9.70 and both Schlesinger and Palmer had 9.55s. That gave Nebraska a 47.45 to 46.95 lead. Allen said the next event, pommel horse, was the key event because UCLA had previously posted the nation's highest score on that event. The Bruins started having problems on the pommel horse when Mike Chap lin fell and only scored an 8.85. Later in the rotation, Tony Pineda, a 1984 member of Mexican Olympic team, fell off the horse and scored a 9.10. The Huskers on the pommel horse continued to stay hot as Davis scored a 9.70 and Schlesinger and Palmer both scored 9.6 to give a 1.5 lead over the Bruins. Allen said the key to winning the meet was how well Davis performed in his spot. "Kevin is the quarterback of the team," Allen said. "If he hits his event, then there is usually a good chance that Schlesinger and Palmer will hit theirs." Allen said the upperclassmen per formed "crisp and clean" against the Bruins. He said they are expected to score over a 57 in the all-around. In the next two rotations, the Huskers continued to build their lead as Schlesinger scored a 9.55 on still rings and a 9.50 in vault to give the Huskers . a 142.35 to 140.40 midway through the meet. Allen said that once the Huskers got into the fifth and sixth rotation that he knew the meet was locked up. On the parallel bars both Schlesin ger and Palmer had career bests. Schlesinger scored a 9.80 despite fal ling on his dismount, and Palmer scored a 9.70. Next weekend, the Huskers will travel to Tucson Ariz., to compete in the Southwest Cup Invitational. They will meet UCLA, Arizona State and Ohio State. "We might have peaked a little too soon but I'm happy with the score," Allen said. "We still haven't beaten Oklahoma yet and next week we have to compete against UCLA again." The Huskers next home meet will be on March 28 against Southern Illinois.
