First, the Bela Lugosi Network (Ch.
36) was axed and replaced by around-the-clock
guys selling zircon fondue
forks for $85. Then the Big Eight Chan
nel was vaporized. NowWOWT in Omaha
has canceled Saturday night's "Thea
tre of the Macabre."
Here's thelowdown. Ijustgotoff the
horn after a big GE teleconference with
a bunch of Brooks Brothers executive
type guys.
"We canceled "Theatre of the Maca
bre' and replaced it with Laurel and
Hardy," they said.
"Oh God, no!" I said. "Laurel and
Hardy are humorous fellas but I need
monstuhs! Gimme smog monsters,
glowing guys, crusty-faced humanoids!"
I cried and carried on for hours. "This
is film history. If you guys don't show
these films nobody will. Bela Lugosi is
God!"
Desperate and hoarse, I resorted to
payola (a case of Billy Beer and a stack
of Famous Monsters of Filmland maga
zines). With a good bribe staring them
in the face, they compromised a bit.
I've been promised by the supervising
clerk of the assistant vice president of
the all-night horror-movie projection
ists ofWOWT that they will continue to
show the flicks, but usually only at the
ungodly hour of 4 or 5 a.m. This means
only lonely psychotics, insomniacs and
overanxious churchgoers will ever get
to see these flicks. I want all of you to
have VCRs by next weekend.
Saturday, 11 p.m. KETV, Ch. 7
"The Shining" (1980) Jack
Nicholson, Shelly Duvall
Most of your snobby, literate fans of
Stephen King novels scoff and say this
flick isn't nearly as good as the book.
All I can say is this: I watch TV, so I
don't need to know how to read. Besides,
this is directed by Stanley Kubrick,
who made some great movies like "Dr.
Strangelove," "2001," "Paths of Glory"
and "A Clockwork Orange." The mas
sive Colorado hotel that is the setting
for the film wasn't good enough for
Stanley, so he spent millions building
some hotel sets.
Jack Nicholson's performance is a
bit much, but who cares I'd proba
bly watch the guy sand woodwork for 90
minutes. Some scary stuff and nasty
words will be chopped, but the advan
tage here is that it's on good old
fashioned free TV.
Friday, 11 p.m. WGN, Ch. 2
"Seven Days in May" (1964).
Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas
A compelling story about a megalo
maniac general (Burt Lancaster) who
conspires to have the military take over
the government. Great cast includes
Frederic March as the president, Kirk
Douglas as an officer who discovers the
plot and Edmond O'Brien (nominated
for an Oscar) as a Southern congressman.
Saturday, 4:50 a.m. WOWT,
Ch. 6
"Island of Lost Souls" (1933)
Charles Laughton, Bela Lugosi
Most folks, when considering classic
horror films of the '30s and '40s, opt for
"Dracula," "Frankenstein" or "The
Wolfman," while an incredible film like
"Island of Lost Souls" is rarely brought
up. It's grim. It's sleazy. It was so offen
sive that it was banned in England for
years. Michael Weldon, author of "The
Phychotronic Encyclopedia of Film,"
says it's probably the scariest movie
ever made.
Based on H.G. Wells' "Isle of Dr.
Moreau," this flick shows the crazed,
sadistic Moreau turning animals into
humans with disastrous results. He
creates hundreds of repulsive Lou Fer-rigno-type
guys. To keep the subhu
mans in line, the godlike psycho-doc
lays down a set of laws, and if the
manimals get out of line, he tortures
them in the House of Pain (not to be
confused with the House of Pancakes).
In one of the more disgusting develop
ments, Moreau tries to mate a ship
wrecked sailor with a woman who is
part panther.
The brilliant Charles Laughton hams
it up a bit as Moreau, and Bela Lugosi
(obscured by gobs of yak hair) is great
as the manimal known as the Sayer of
the Law. Look for the apeman with a
Hungarian accent.-The makeup alone
is amazing. Set the timer on the old
VCR or take a nap 'til 4 a.m.
Sunday, 1 p.m. WGN, Ch. 2
"Charlie Chan and the Chi
nese Ring" (1947) Roland Winters
Roland Winters (born in Boston)
stars as Charlie Chan, making him the
third white guy in 12 years to squint his
eyes and pretend he's Chinese. Mono
gram Pictures stole the plot from one of
its own films, "Mr. Wong in Chinatown"
( 1 939), in which Boris Karloff (a British
guy with a lisp) pretends to be Chinese.
The real reason to watch "The Chi
nese Ring" is to see Mantan Moreland,
a black comedian who worked in scores
of films. Mantan was in numerous Chan
films as the detective's chauffeur and
confidant, Birmingham Brown. While
people of all races should be offended
by the derogatory characterization of
the cowardly, eye-popping black man,
Mantan was an integral part of the his
tory of blacks in films.
