Burton and his band soon will be
released on a French independent label,
GMG, and get European distribution.
Burton is the second Nebraska artist to
make it on a French independent label.
Omaha's Digital Sex released an LP in
France last year, and did quite well on
the independent charts.
Burton's signing to a Fnvn label
started soon after the release of his
latest LP, "I Heard That," in 1985. A
disc jockey in Bordeaux, France, named
Jose Ruiz came across the LP and
started playing it on his rock-a-billy
show over Radio France Gironde. Soon

Burton is part of a growing trend
among French independent labels who
are recording American roots music,
(rock'n'roll, rock-a-billy, etc.) which
has a large following in Europe, espe
cially in France and England. The lab
els usually produce and distribute
established bands that can't get on
major labels in the United States or
England, or have signed with a major
but didn't sell enough to keep the con
tract. Joe "King" Carrosco and the
Crowns, the LeRoi Brothers, and now
Charlie Burton and the Hiccups are
part of this trend.
Burton's LP isn't quite out yet, but
the company has sent the band a check

most intriguing cut is "Greenwood," a
melancholy, lovely piece about cultural
malaise, which nonetheless suffers from
metaphorical obtuseness.
The best songs on the album,
for the rights to distribute it.
"They sent us money. Contrary to
rumor, it's not that much. It was
reported to be a 'tidy sum.' It's tidy in
that there's not much to dust and it's
easy to keep clean," Burton said.
"It's not like we're partying all the
time. They money just went a little
ways towards paying to produce the
album," he said.
Work on Burton's next LP is under
way. The Hiccups, David Boye on bass,
Dave Robel on drums and Phil Sho
emaker on guitar, are making a demo
tape to send off to U.S. independent
labels like GMG. They also will send a
copy to Peter Buck, REM's guitarist,
who has expressed interest in produc
ing the band's next album.
"We're not going to put the next one
out ourselves, and if we do, we're going
to spend less money," Burton said.

love song with overtones of a more
literate Jimmy Buffett.
Most delightful of all is "Right

Magnuson chews foot
in Scorchers review
Stew Magnuson once again
displayed his ignorance and over
developed cliche vocabulary in his
concert review (DN, Feb. 10). His
review of Jason and the Scorchers

sounded more like a fashion review.
What Warner Hodges wears or what
his hairstyle is certainly does not
warrant a comparison with Motley
Crue. After all, isn't it the music
that counts? Furthermore, when
Magnuson quipped about Hodges
"whipping around his electric
guitar," he ignored the fact that
Hodges is probably the best guitar
ist Lincoln has seen in a long time.
Anyone as talented as Hodges
shouldn't be ashamed to show it
and throw in a few impressive licks

Overall, "No Easy Walk to Freedom"
is enjoyable. PP&M's professionalism
and musical good nature seems to have
kept them, to a surprising degree, from
becoming dated. This album will be
enjoyed both by longtime PP&M fans
and by younger listeners in search of
something different.

How ironic it is that Magnuson
criticized Hodges for "whipping
around his wireless guitar" while
admiring the Thunderbirds' Vaughan
when he "stuck his guitar behind
his head and let loose."
Magnuson also sticks his over
chewed foot in his mouth again
when he implies that the Scorchers
didn't play any of their "old, good
stuff." In fact, the Scorchers played
mostly their "old, good stuff" and
only a few "new" songs were played.
Even bad reporters would not fill
their columns with such inconsis
tencies. Once again, this just goes
to show the unparalleled amateurism
