"It takes someone with hustle," said Rod Merta, program coordinator of the International Educational Ser vices Office. "People need identifia ble skills, committment to serving others, flexibility and a good sense of humor." Merta and other IES personnel direct students interested in part time work abroad to the Overseas Opportunity Center, a resource library in the IES Office at the City Union. "We help match the right informa tion with the right person," Merta said. "We can totally prepare some one for life abroad." In order for any U.S. citizen to work abroad he or she must obtain a work permit. 00C hu.5 brochures from the Coun cil on International Educational Exchange. "Students must plan ahead in their education," Merta said. "So many students think they can simply major in English and go overseas and find a job. That isn't true. If a French per son studied English and came to the U.S. and tried to get a job they would meet up with employers who would say, "So what else can you do?" Internship experience Merta said that even if students can't match up with a job right away it gives undergrads an idea what skills currently are in demand overseas.
