Allen said that, for instance, most people take up to six months to recover from such an ankle injury. Because of injury, Davis missed a trip to Alexandria, Egypt, to compete in the International Cup of Peace. However, he has tra veled to the Philippines, Brazil, Argentina, Macao, Hong Kong and Cuba for matches. Davis said he eryoys traveling. Hong Kong was his favorite place to visit because of all the inter esting and different things there, he said. Davis finished 10th at the 1986 United States Champion ships in the all-around, which he said was his most memorable moment in gymnastics. He also won junior national titles on the parallel bars in 1982 and the pommel horse in 1983. Davis began gymnastics in the eighth grade, which, he said, is a late start for a gymnast. However, he said, soon after he began he knew he wanted to continue working at gymnastics. Davis said he was recruited by nearly all the major colleges, but chose Nebraska because he felt "Francis Allen and Jim Howard had the best coaching combina tion out of all the ones I saw. They have great reputations in the gymnastics field." Davis said his long-term goals include making the 1988 U.S. Olympic team. "He (Davis) is one of the pre mier all-arounders in the country," Allen said. "He should at least finish in the top five in the all-around at the NCAA championships, and with a little work he could make the 1988 Olympic team." Davis said his favorite event is the pommel horse, in which he finished ninth last year at the NCAA championships. Allen said this is Davis's strongest event. Davis said the team's goal this season is to win the NCAA cham pionship. Nebraska finished se cond to Arizona State last year. "I think we all have the same team goal," Davis said, "espe cially since we've been so close each of the past two seasons." Allen said that Nebraska's upcoming meet with Oklahoma and Iowa State is a big one for the Cornhuskers as they work toward that goal. "I think that we need to gel as a team in this meet," Allen said. "We've set a goal to score over 278 for this meet, and we feel that this team can make that very easily." Nebraska's meet with Okla homa and Iowa State will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
