Survey results show students pleased by service
By Kari Hulac
Staff Reporter
The University Health Center is pleasing most
of its patients, results from a fall survey indicate.
The survey conducted on 144 students last fall
shows that 98.5 percent of the respondents said
they would recommend the health center to a
friend, and 96.5 percent said they would see the
same doctor again.
The survey included questions on staff cour
tesy, cleanliness and quality of care. Results are
compared with results from the last four years.
Of those surveyed, 40.7 percent said they had
heard about the Health Center through word of
mouth.
Greg Barth, the health center's systems man
ager, said this figure is encouraging because
word of mouth referral can be a "business' best
advertisement."
Another positive sign, Barth said, was that
most patients said they would visit the same
doctor again. He said many students have no
alternative form of health care, and it's impor
tant that they be satisfied with their doctors.
Barth said that to insure accurate survey
results, two other surveys are given in addition to
fall and spring surveys. One is in specific
departments within the health center, such as in
the radiology department and the other is a
campuswide telephone survey done through the
Bureau of Sociological Research. Barth said the
telephone survey reaches about 300 students.
Barth said the health center's worst problem
is the lack of patient understanding about fees
and bills.
In the survey, 25 percent said they were con
fused about fees. The Health Center is trying to
update its computer system to make the billing
process easier.
An example of an improvement is seen in
perceived waiting-time statistics, Barth said.
The 1985 fall survey showed that 28 percent felt
they were waiting more than 16 minutes to see a
doctor. This fall only 11.2 percent felt they
waited that long.
Other concerns were about staff courtesy,
hours and parking.
Barth, who has worked with survey statistics
for seven years, said health-center performance
is high because department heads actively
respond to the concerns revealed by the surveys.
Survey results are presented to department
heads, the Quality Assurance Committee and the
Student Advisory Board. The department heads
then meet with their staffs to find solutions.

Regents that "it is time the university
had a workable and enforced alcohol
policy."
But Sen. Carey Peters called this bill
"slanderous against the Regents," and
Sen. Angie Schuerman called it a
"waste of time."
Scudder said, "This kind of thing
defeats efforts toward alcohol reform
on campus. I don't believe having alco
hol at ASUN installation is of great
importance."
She said if the senators were trying
to make a statement they should have
done simply that. She said she is unwil
ling to take the bill to the Board of
Regents.
"They're asking me to do something
we already know is fatal," she said. "I
like to approach things to win."

During the Senate meeting Wednes
day night, Jerry Roemer resigned as
speaker so he could devote more time
to the ad-hoc budget reduction com
mittee. Roemer will remain a senator but
will relinquish his duties as speaker
because he said he would have "great
difficulty in being a very good speaker
and serving on the budget committee."
He said while taking 19 credit hours
he can't "fully devote the time I need to
speaker to make it work," he said.
ASUN President Chris Scudder, said,
"I'm disappointed to see him go as he
has been an excellent speaker, but at
the same time I admire his dedication
to the ad hoc budget committee because
that's our biggest concern right now."
Scudder said she is unaware of any
previous ASUN executives resigning
during a senate meeting.
"It took people by surprise," she
said.
,Sen. Doug Weems called this an
nouncement a "bombshell" that was
"not good precedent" because the
senate then had to elect a new speaker
"on five minutes notice."
The senate elected Weems to be the
next speaker.
Roemer said his announcement was
a straightforward attempt to make the
senators make a decision and move on.
He urged the senators to elect a new
speaker immediately because of the
"urgency of upcoming appointments." fiat
Unions request budget hike
By Kip Fry
Staff Reporter
A slight increase in student fees for the
Nebraska Unions was requested at a meeting
of the Committee for Fees Allocation Thurs
day night.
The proposed budget for the 1987-88 school
year will be $1,124,971 an increase of
$28,361 over last year's figure of $1,096,610,
according to Daryl Swanson, director of the
Nebraska Unions.
Budget increases include: Administrative
Functions ($177,611); City Union Office of
Campus Activities and Programs ($260,935);
Women's Resource Center ($19,673); and
Food Service Subsidy ($37,516).
Swanson also announced that the net
income plus the overhead borne by Union
Square during the fiscal year ending June 30,
1986 totalled $33,892.
Swanson would not announce what fast
food franchise would move into the Union
Square area.
Questions have been raised as to why a
franchise is being brought in when they are
basically just "trading dollars," which would
be brought in, Swanson said.
"The future of Union Square is bleak, w hile
the future of a franchise is bright," he said.
However, Swanson added, the Harvest Room
is "going nowhere," and has been in that
state for the last five years.
In other business, the committee decided
to reduce the budget of the ASUN Informa
tion Office in the City Union by $480, thus
eliminating one of the work study positions. A
proposal to cut the entire budget of the
Information Center was later voted down.
