Tuesday, January 20, 1987 Daily Nebraskan Page 7 White lie leads to danger, suspense in thriller, 'The Bedroom Window ' By Greg Vest Staff Reviewer Very few movies since the reign of Hitchcock have combined all the right elements to give us a thrill in the vein of "Rear Window" and "The Man Who Knew Too Much." Movie Review Based on the novel, "The Witnesses," "The Bedroom Window" instantly cap tures the audience's .attention and then sends them on a roller-coaster ride of suspense. At times throughout this modern thriller I was hoping it would end just so I could calm down. The film is set in Baltimore, and director Curtis Hanson uses this city effectively. From the various bars and rundown row houses to the rainy nights and old architecture, he creates an eerie effect that permeates the movie. Steve Guttenberg gives a fine dra matic performance as the architect hero who gets caught with his pants down (in more ways than one). He plays Terry Lambert, who is having an affair with his boss's wife, Sylvia (played by Isabelle Huppert). When they meet at his apartment after a party, she wit nesses an assault from his bedroom window. She distracts the attacker so the victim Denise (Elizabeth McGov ern) can escape. However, another woman is victimized and murdered three blocks away on the same night. Since Sylvia cannot inform the police about . what she witnessed without exposing her waywardness, Lambert says he saw the assault. This white lie sets the stage for the rest of the movie. I refuse to reveal any more of the action because it would spoil all the great twists of the plot. The acting is all acceptable, and the three stars all play their roles with professional ease. Without this, the movie would lack some of its quality. The killer, while having hardly any dia logue, says more than enough with is knife-like glances and dark expres sions. The writing is well-paced and tasteful. No major bloodbaths or explicit sex. While there is some nudity and adult language, it is minor. The dia logue is natural, and the plot becomes more and more involved and twisted. Toward the end I was literally on the edge of my seat. (So was the guy behind me; I could feel his breath on my neck). Yet there are still bits of good humor to offset the intensity of the suspense. While this movie isn't Hitchcock, I think it is unfair to make such a com parison. "The Bedroom Window" is suspenseful and put together well, and is a great all-around production. See it. Unlike Sylvia, you'll be glad you did. "The Bedroom Window" is rate It and is now showing at the State Theatre. AMdy reeks of idiocy WARHOL from Page 6 During each interview, Warhol adds a litany of flashy nonsequiturs to make everything look "artsy." While he talks, a scantily clad model will swing on a trapeze over head or a voluptuous woman will walk by, flashing her low-cut blouse or her tight skirt to the cameras. And Andy always gets the people who really matter to be guests on his show. Like Phoebe Cates, the former model who played a porno star on the miniseries "Lace;" or Paulina, the world's top model; or the stars of the new film "Platoon" talking about war. Next we get to see a young artist talking about what art means to him while more pulsating disco music throbs in the background. "I like to see women wearing underwear in public," one said. "Well, so do I. That's why I can't see why you like polka music," Andy replied. You get the idea. The show's like a bad episode of "Donahue" filled with incoherent lines and lots of technical gloss to make everything look legitimate. But that's the essence of Warhol he's always tried to make pue rile efforts look like "the real art." You really can't put down Warhol anymore because he wants you to do so. He knows that he's a fake and the more he hears that fact said, the more satisfaction he gets. So he continues to bombard us with mock talk shows, magazines and paint ings that other people create so he can put his name on them after they are finished. The verdict on Warhol's latest object d'artl Well, who knows what it all means nothing? but it sure looks good. And Warhol, always a fan of publicity, has had his name dropped in a Nebraska col lege paper. I'll bet he's satisfied. That's spelled W-A-R-H-O-L, right, Andy? ?in ursi By GARY LARSON J-7W 7 1 JtkOmx. un"- 1987 Universal Press Syndicate p ' Simultaneously all three went for the ball, and the coconut-like sound of their heads hitting secretly delighted the bird. 3 Edited by EUGENE T.
