Faced with a career-threatening injury, Nebraska's Shauna Gilmore had a swimmer's determination by recover ing from a torn rotator cuff in one year. Just before the start of her sophomore season at Nebraska, Gilmore began to suffer pain in her right shoulder. When the pain increased to the point that she was unable to lift her right arm above her head, Gilmore said, she knew it was time to consult a shoulder specialist. The strategy paid off, as Gilmore recovered from an injury which Nebraska women's swimming coach Ray Huppert said ends the careers of many swimmers. "I was in constant pain for almost a month so it was very difficult, " Gilmore said. "It was a tough time for me." Gilmore said the most difficult part of the injury was watching her team mates perform while she was unable to contribute. A high school Ail-American, Gilmore had been counted on heavily by Nebraska to contribute with former Cornhuskers Emily Ricketts and Linda Sebesta both of whom arrived with her recruiting class. But with her injury, Gilmore said she was forced to watch Nebraska compile a second-place finish in the Big Eight from the pool deck. "Seeing an athlete with her ability watch from the pool deck was difficult on me," Huppert said. "I didn't think she would come back." Huppert credits both Gilmore's determination and her patience for her ability to recover from her injury. During the course of her redshirt season, Gilmorfe was forced to go through a period of time in which her injured shoulder was entirely immobil ized, Huppert said. Then, after nearly three months of not even being able to move her arm, Gilmore was allowed to slowly begin working her shoulder back into shape. "I started out swimming until my shoulder ached, whether it was after 30 or 500 yards," Gilmore said. "The danger of reinjuring my shoulder was still --. . . t i V - ' Gilmore there, so I had to be extremely careful." Finally, after a year of slowly building her shoulder back up to full strength, Gilmore was given permission to test her shoulder full speed in the water. That test proved to be a positive one, as Gilmore went on to score 37 points during Nebraska's upset victory over Kansas in the 1985 Big Eight Champion ships.
