NEW ORLEANS The shoulder ride
Louisiana State football coach Bill
Arnsparger received after the Tigers'
30-15 loss to Nebraska in the Sugar
Bowl represented the end of a coaching
career that spanned 36 years.
Arnsparger, who announced earlier
he would retire from coaching follow
ing LSU's match-up with Nebraska in
order to become the athletic director
at Florida, said he didn't treat the 53rd
annual New Year's Day contest as any
thing special.
Arnsparger said the only special pre
game element he added to his pep talk
was to tell all of the Tiger players he
would miss them.
"Each one of us will be judged on
what we do here," Arnsparger told his
players. "We will all be measured."
Arnsparger said he was somewhat
disappointed to close out his lengthy
coaching career with a loss to the No.
4-ranked Cornhuskers.
Louisiana State, which entered the
game a 4 12-point underdog, saw its
early 7-0 lead slip away when Nebraska
tallied 10 points in the second quarter
and then added 20 second-half points
to bring the game to its final outcome.
"It's disappointing when you work
hard and don't do something well,"
Arnsparger said.
Louisiana State assistant coach Mike
Archer said he felt bad for Arnsparger
because Tiger fans would have a ten
dency to remember LSU's loss to Ne
braska rather than think about the
Southeastern Conference title or the
26-8-2 record LSU compiled under Arns
parger. Archer, who was named by LSU's
Board of Supervisors to succeed Arns
parger as the Tigers' coach, said it
would have been nice to send the
former defensive coordinator for the
NFL's Miami Dolphins off with a victory.
"People remember you by what you
do last," Archer said. "That's unfor
tunate." Archer said he wasn't surprised that
Arnsparger chose not to play up his last
game as a coach.
Coming into the contest, Archer said
Arnsparger told the tigers about the
opportunity to win 10 games and thanked
the LSU players for the three years he
was coach.
"He's not going to boast," Archer
said. "That was his approach."
Tiger noseguard Henry Thomas said
entering the contest LSlfs 17 seniors
were motivated more because they all
wanted to send Arnsparger away with a
victory.
But after seeing the Tigers drop to
9-3, Thomas vented his frustrations by
saying he was a better noseguard than
Nebraska All-American Danny Noonan.
"I don't think he (Noonan) has the
foot and hand speed I have," Thomas
told the Daily, Nebraskan. "He doesn't
have the total understanding of the
game."
Thomas also said he was puzzled by
the Sugar Bowl's selection of both him
and Noonan to the defensive players of
the game team.
"I was just trying to figure out what
he did," Thomas said.
Louisiana State wide receiver Wen
dell Davis said he wasn't surprised by
Thomas's post-game comments because
both sides had been exchanging words
almost since the Huskers arrival in
New Orleans.
Throughout the game, Davis said
both teams were calling each other
names.
"We got caught up in that," Davis, an
All-American, said. "We should have
backed away from that."
Both Davis and LSU senior Toby Cas
ton said the Tigers wanted to win the
game first for themselves and then for
Arnsparger.
When it became apparent that the
contest was well in Nebraska's favor,
Caston said, he began to feel frustrated.
"That was the most frustrating game
of my career," Caston said.
Louisiana State quarterback Tommy
Hodson said he also felt frustrated
throughout the contest because Ne
braska was able to contain the Tigers'
dangerous passing attack.
Hodson, whose lone touchdown pass
of the contest came last in the fourth
quarter against Nebraska's second-team
defense, said Nebraska used "basic
coverage with a lot of variations" to
smother LSU's passing game.
"I looked for guys, (receivers), but
nobody was really open," Hodson said.
"They came out and were very physical."
