Japan, UNL to tumble in gymnastics meet By Rich Cooper Staff Reporter pnce ever. UNIVERSITY BOOKSTORE COMPUTER SHOP Nebraska Union Lower Level The Japan All Star gymnastics team will square off against the Nebraska men's and women's gymnastics team at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Nebraska men's gymnastics coach Francis Allen said it will be a tough meet. The Huskers won the Big Eight Invitational last Saturday night with a team score of 276.8. Allen said he was very happy with the performances of the team, especially Kevin Davis, Neil Palmer and Tom Schlesinger who took the first three places in the all-around competition. Allen said he thinks his team is the best team in the nation especially after it scored a 276 in its first meet. Allen also said he thinks he has the best freshmen class in the nation this year. Two out of three freshmen competed for the Cornhuskers Saturday night. Bob Stelter from Burbank, Calif., jo::i wawMS boot pops HOT BY EOSTOH iv'.i&ifi; if . . The other freshman, Patrick Kirksey from Tucker, Ga., scored a 53.10 in the all-around, a 9.5 on the pommel horse and a 9.3 on floor exercise. In order for the Huskers to defeat the Japanese, they are going to have to stay intense the whole meet, Allen said. "I see us being competitive with them, but the pressure is on them because they haven't lost a meet yet," Allen said. "They know we are going to come after them, we do every year." The Huskers will be without junior Mike Epperson, who broke a bone in his right wrist over the summer and will be out for the entire season. "Mike could come back and compete for us toward the end of the season, but he wouldn't be healthy and he would just be wasting a season," Allen said. "It would be to his benefit that he sit out this year and get in shape for next year." On the women's side, the Cornhuskers will be trying to win their second straight meet with the Japanese. "We really had a good year last year, we finished 17th in the nation," Nebraska coach Rick Walton said. "That success has continued into the fall and with our freshmen class this year, we are an NCAA Championship caliber team." Walton said the two good things about his team this year are depth and the people he has returning. Walton said the top returning gym nasts are junior Racine Smith, and sophomore Crystal Savage, Jeaneane Smith and Mary Ocel. "The Japanese have an advantage over us because they have already competed in four meets, when this is our first meet," Walton said. "But our advantage is we have been working in the gym all fall and the girls are anxious to compete and that will definitely help us." Walton said Nebraska fans should expect to see harder routines from the gymnasts on the uneven bars and floor exercise.
