After winning the seven-team Husker
Invitational last weekend, Nebraska's
men's swimming team will face its next
test of the season when the Corn
huskers host Southern Illinois tonight
at 7 p.m. in the Bob Devaney Sports
Center.
Nebraska coach Cal Bentz said the
Salukis are a talented team and should
give the No. 18-ranked Huskers a stiff
challenge.
"They're a good team," Bentz said.
"Last week they were ranked 12th.
They have got a guy who was an NCAA
500-meter champion and several other
good swimmers."
Gary Brinkman, who came to South
ern Illinois from South Africa, is the
Salukis' returning NCAA champion in
that event.
The Huskers will be led by sopho
more Mike Irvin, who met NCAA quali
fying times in the 200- and 400-meter
individual medley events during the
Husker Invitational. Other Nebraska
NCAA qualifiers are Tony Poleo and
Sean Frampton in the 100-meter breast
stroke and the 800-meter freestyle relay
team, which includes Irvin, Jeff Brown,
Dan Novinski and Kollin Kostboth.
Bentz said he would like to qualify
several more swimmers for the NCAA
Championships, which will be held in
Austin, Texas, in early April.
"We feel that we've got both relays
. . .yet to qualify and we have several
others who could qualify," he said.
The team's early season success,
which has also included an upset of
Louisiana State, has pleased Bentz.
"We're pleased that we've been able
to acheive, one-by-one, some of our pre
season goals," Bentz said.
Bentz said the team divides its goals
into first and second semester. He said
the team has accomplished many of
their early season goals.
"We've really focused in on what we
want to do, which is to qualify as many

people as we can for the NCAAs," he
said. "We'll go to California (Jan. 3)
and swim against the University of
Hawaii and Long Beach State and then
come back second semester, using the
short-range goals to achieve the long
range. The long-range roal is to improve on
last year's 26th-place finish in the
NCAA Championships.
With the Nebraska volleyball team
playing Penn State at 8 p.m. in the
Sports Center with a Final Four berth
at stake, Bentz is hoping volleyball fans
will come and see the swimming team.
"We might work on getting the
Nebraska fans to come earlier to the
swim meet," he said.
Boxing bout set tonight
By The Associated Press
NEW YORK - Slim Robinson, the
trainer of Tim Witherspoon, said Thurs
day night the World Boxing Association
champion will defend his title against
James "Bonecrusher" Smith tonight at
Madison Square Garden.
The fight has been in an uncertain
state all week because of questions
about contracts and promoter Don
King's charges that Witherspoon was
trying to get more money for the fight.
Huskers want trip to Final Four
By Rich Cooper

Nebraska volleyball coach Terry Pet
tit said he thinks you have to take
something if you want it and hopes his
team will as the Cornhuskers take
another step towards the NCAA Final
Four in Stockton, Calif., Dec. 18 through
20.
The Huskers, ranked No. 6 in the
NCAA poll, will square off against No.
14 Penn State in the Mideast Regional
semifinal Friday at 8 p.m. at the Bob
Devaney Sports Center. The match will
follow the 6 p.m. Illinois-Western Mich
igan game. Winners of each game will
play Saturday night's regional final at
7:30. The winner moves to the Final
Four.
Pettit said his team needs to play
each point well to win. He said he was
pleased at how his team came back last
weekend against Pittsburgh.
"Lately the team has responded well
in game situations, and I hope we can
continue to do that," Pettit said. "Bas
ically it's up to the players now. I'm just
along for the ride."
Against Pittsburgh, the Huskers lost

the first game, 15-11. Behind the play of
Kathi DeBoer and Enid Schonewise,
Nebraska won the next three games for
the match. In game two DeBoer had
seven consecutive service points.
Schonewise had a season-high 22 kills
in the last two games.
Penn State coach Buss Rose said for
his team to win, it needs to serve
aggressively and play good defense
against Nebraska. The other key will be
how well setter Ellen Hensler plays,
Rose said.
The Huskers finished the season as
the nation's top hitting team with a
.348 percentage. They are led by senior
Karen Dahlgren, who finished third
individually in the country with a .421
hitting percentage. Schonewise hit .349
and freshman Virginia Stahr hit .349,
finishing seventh and 12th respectively.
If the Huskers win Friday night, they
will play Illinois should that team
win. On Sept. 21 the Huskers defeated
Illinois 3-1 in Chicago. Since the loss to
Nebraska, the Fighting Illini have won
24 consecutive games. Their game
against Western Michigan Friday will
be the third time the two teams have
met. Illinois won both previous matches
3-1 and 3-2. The Huskers haven't played
against Western Michigan this year.
Illinois coach Mike Herbert said the
Illini loss to Nebraska was a learning
experience. They lost because Nebras
ka's hitting attack was just too power
ful, he said.
