Friday, December 12, 1986 Daily Nebraskan Page 11 New hmli Unas style By Chris McCubbin Senior Reporter The fiction of Gabriel Garcia Marquez epitomizes everything worthwhile in 20th-century litera ture. Garcia Marquez, a Columbian, writes stories in which reality and fantasy mix delicately and intri cately and turn out to be the same thing. Garcia Marquez's works are, on the surface, a model of prose clarity and economical use of lan- Book Review guage. But behind this are levels of beauty and meaning that extend ever deeper to infinity. Garcia Marquez's gift is the ability to perceive and communicate the religious, psychological, ethical, metaphysical, sociological and pol itical ramifications of such acts as adding a room to a house or emptying a chamber pot, without appearing to be saying any more than that a room was built or a chamber pot emptied. His classic novel, "One Hundred Years of Solitude," may be the single best work of fiction produced this century. Garcia Marquez's new novel, "The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor," is neither new nor a novel. In February 1955 eight sailors were washed from the deck of a Colombian naval vessel and presumed lost. Ten days later one of the sailors, named Luis Alejandro Velasco, washed up, alive and conscious, on the Colombian shore. The full title of his story is "The Story Of A Shipwrecked Sailor who drifted on a life raft for ten days without food or water, was pro claimed a national hero, kissed by beauty queens, made rich through publicity, and then spurned by the government and forgotten for all time." At this time Garcia Marquez was a reporter with a left-wing Colom bian newspaper, "El Espectadore." He interviewed Velasco, and these are the transcripts of those inter views. In his forward to the book Garcia Marquez says that every word of the book is Velasco's and that he merely wrote down what he was told. "Shipwrecked Sailor" is a great adventure story. And no doubt original readers were amazed to learn of the negligence aboard the destroyer Caldras that led to the deaths of three crewmembers and of the coverup afterward. "I lay there for about ten minutes. Little by little I was regaining my strength. It was after six in the morning and the sun shone brightly. Among the coconut shells along the side of the road were some whole coconuts. I crawled toward them, propped myself up on a tree trunk, and pressed one of the smooth, impenetrable fruits between my knees. Anxiously I inspected it for soft spots, as I had done with the first five days before. With each turn I could feel the milk splash inside. The deep, guttural sound reawakened my thirst. My stomach ached, the wound on my knee was bleeding, and my fingers, raw at the tips, throbbed with a slow, deep pain. During the ten days at sea there had never been a moment when I felt I would go crazy, but I though I would that morning as I turned the coconut round and round, trying to find a place to open it and listening to the clean, fresh, inaccessible milk spash around inside."
