year, but Neumann expects things to
be different once action gets underway '
tonight at 7:30.
"I really anticipate that it will be a
lot closer this year," he said. 'They've
gotten several quality kids from the
junior-college ranks and with junior
college kids they have not had to put
up with the freshman adjustments
when they come in. We have a lot of
freshmen wrestling because we are
redshirting four starters."
One freshman who has shown a lot of
promise so far, according to Neumann,
is 118-pounder Jason Kelber, who has
compiled a 7-4 record this season. The
problem with Kelber, as with most
freshmen, has been consistency, Neu
mann said.
"Our freshmen have not been con
sistent," Neumann said. "They've shown
spots of greatness at times and at other
times they have wrestled like fresh
men. Kelber beat the No. 4 rated guy at
Northern Iowa in the first round and
then he lost to a kid from a Division III
school, so their performances have not
been consistent."
Neumann can count on the perfor
mance of 134-pound senior Gil San
chez, who raised his season record to
21-1 with a win at the Northern Iowa
Open last weekend. Sanchez claimed
an 11-2 decision over Olympic silver
medalist and three-time NCAA cham
pion Barry Davis in the finals.
"It would be nice to have great fan
support because most of their wrestlers
at UNO have two or three years of col
lege experience. A good crowd could
put some life in our team," Neumann
said.
