Nebraska women's swimming coach Kay Hup
pert had mixed emotions Sunday following the
conclusion of the Husker Invite.
Huppert said he was glad that his team fin
ished second to nationally ranked Clemson in
the six-team competition, but was concerned
because none of the Cornhuskers cut their times
enough to automatically qualify for the NCAA
championships in March. The Tigers defeated
Nebraska 990-771.
"There's a certain amount of disappointment
in not making any of our cuts," Huppeit said. "I
was happy to see our team fight hard, but our
number one priority going into the weekend was
our cuts."
Huppert blamed a missed taper for the
Huskers' inability to shave enough time off of
their seasonal marks.
Nebraska competed in the meet fully shaved
and dressed in skin suits, but Huppert said those
two factors weren't enough to overcome the
missed taper.
"If you're off a little it adds a great deal of
weight in the water," Huppert said. "I think
there was some frustration because we wanted
to take advantage of this meet and qualify as
many of our athletes for the NCAAs as possible."
In the men's competition, Mike Irvin won
three events and set two meet records to lead
Nebraska to an 843-766.5 win against Clemson.
Huppert said he was happy to see the Nebraska
women hold off third-place Kansas and fourth
place Colorado State to place second.
Coming into the final day of competition on
Sunday, Nebraska held a 15-point lead over the
Jayhawks and a 74-point lead over Colorado
State.
The Huskers managed to widen both of those
margins in the final session as they defeated the
conference-rival Jayhawks by 30 points and the
Golden Rams by 103.
New Mexico finished fourth while North
Dakota and Wyoming were fifth and sixth,
respectively. -
"I think Kansas thought it would swim a little
better than it did," Huppert said. "Colorado
State swam well in the meet, but our depth
prevailed."
Kansas coach Gary Kempf said he chose not to
enter his swimmers fully rested or tapered.
What the remaining five teams saw of the
Jayhawks in the Husker Invite is not a true
picture of how much talent Kansas has, Kempf
said.
"We pushed their (Nebraska's) women to the
limit," he said. "We made strides in the right
direction and we didn't make the committment
a lot of other teams did."
Kempf said it is difficult to tell who has the
superior team between Nebraska and Kansas
because the Jayhawks didn't go all out in their
second meeting with the Huskers this season.
Either way, Kempf said this year's Big Eight
rce is already shaping up to be a good one.
"We're as good as anybody here," Kempf said.
"Nebraska is going to have to have a great meet
to win and we're going to-have to have a great
meet to win. It's dead even."
Clemson coach Bob Boettner said he knew
going into the meet what type of challenge
Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado State would
pose.
After seeing the seventh-ranked Tigers make
17 NCAA cuts and post 50 senior national times,
Boettner said he expected a tougher competition.
"This meet wasn't as fast as we expected,"
Boettner said. "We were still able to swim really
well largely because we had a great week."
Clemson jumped to a 312-245 lead over Nebras
ka after the meet's first day of competition when
the Tigers used record-setting performances by
both Mitzi Kremer and Jan Kemmerling t o stake
themselves to the early lead.
Kremer won the 500 freestyle in a meet record
time of 4:47.56 while Kemmerling won the 200
individual medley in a meet-record 2:03.67.
The Tigers then padded their lead to 705-562
over Nebraska following the second-day of com
petition when Jill Bakehorn and Pam Hayden set
meet records in the 100 backstroke and the 200
freestyle. Clemson's 400 medley relay team of
Bakehorn, Hayden, Kremer and Ruth Grodsky
also set a meet record during Saturday's second-session.
Clemson then wrapped up its first Husker
Invite title on Sunday when the Tigers rewrote
three more records.
Bakehorn, Hayden and Grodsky accounted for
the final three meet record's for the Tigers. They
combined to win the 200 backstroke, the 200
breaststroke and the 200 butterfly.
"Our girls did a great job," Boettner said. "I'm
very happy with our performance."
