Thursday, December 4, 1986 Page 14 Daily Nebraskan TA7 By Jeff Apel Staff Reporter With a cast that includes Clint Hur dle, Gene Tenace and Larry Haney, New York Mets bullpen coach Vern Hoscheit has earned the respect of the baseball world. Hoscheit, who was born in Bruns wick and now resides in Plainview dur ing the off-season, said he has played a major role in the development of each of the three major-league catchers. Without his help, Hoscheit said, it is difficult to predict where Haney, Tenace or Hurdle would have gone in their major-league careers. "All it takes for a player to make the transition to catcher is the desire," Hoscheit said Wednesday. "If they don't have the desire, I just say, 'forget it.'" i Hoscheit said his fondness for devel oping major-league players can be traced back to 1941, his first year in minor league baseball. Hoscheit defeated 13 other individuals for the starting catch ing position on the Norfolk baseball squad. Following a rookie season in which he compiled a .284 average, Hoscheit spent his next season at Joplin, which was also a member of the Western Association. World War II interrupted his playing for three years, but Hoscheit managed to resume his baseball career by split ting time the next two seasons between Binghampton in the Eastern League, Norfolk in the Piedmont League and Kansas City in the American Association. In the following year, 1948, Hoscheit began his career as a player-manager for McAlester in the Sooner State League. It was during this time that Hoscheit equaled the feat accomplished by his longtime friend Casey Stengel by cap turing five league championships. Hoscheit closed out his playing career with Quincy of the Three-I League in 1955 but continued to manage that club until he was appointed manager of Greensboro in the Carolina League in 1958. Hoscheit spent the next 10 years of his career as the president of the Three-I League and acting as a scout and coach for the Baltimore Orioles. In 1969 Hoscheit joined the Oakland Athletics as an assistant coach. During this time the 64-year-old Hoscheit won the first three of his four World Series rings. Before being appointed to his posi tion with the Mets, Hoscheit was an assistant coach with the California Angles in 1976. Hoscheit said he has been influ enced by many individuals during his 45-year baseball career, especially Sten gel and former American League Presi dent Lee McPhail. Hoscheit said Stengel taught him the ropes of managing early in his career by allowing him to be his per sonal chauffeur during spring training. Hoscheit thus could attend meetings and obtain a better knowledge of the game. McPhail told Hoscheit he would never be a major-league player, he said. "I just wasn't good enough (to be a major-legue player)," Hoscheit said. "It hurt me when he told me I wouldn't be a big-league player, but it also allowed me to devote all my time to managing." Hoscheit said there is nothing more he wishes to accomplish next year dur ing what is expected to be his final season as the Mets' bullpen coach. When he retires from his current position, Hoscheit said, he would like to remain with the Mets as a part-time catching instructor. This would allow him to sell his business, Shortstop Liquor in Plainview, and continue to develop younger catchers. "I'd also have more time to hunt coyotes and raccoons with my dogs," Hoscheit said. "It's going to be a change, but I'm looking forward to it."
