Dig Audio Dynamite, "No. 10,
Upping St." (CBS)
First the good news. Mick Jones
and Joe Strummer are making music
together again. There is no bad
news.
History of Punk 103: Jones and
Strummer were the creative team
behind the Clash. After "Combat
Rock," the Clash's biggest album
ever, Strummer decided that big
albums weren't punk and booted
Jones. The Clash promptly disinti
grated into a completely useless
heap of refuse, but it took Strummer
a couple of years and one album to
realize he was front-man for the
band of the living dead. Jones formed
a pretty good hip-hopdub outfit
called Big Audio Dynamite.
Current events: Strummer wakes
up, grows up, stops pouting and gets
back with Jones on the second

an album as good as the Clash at its
best. Hosanna.
For the record Strummer pro
duced the album and co-wrote five
out of nine songs. I could swear I
heard him singing on some tracks,
but if it was him he's not credited.
Enough for Joe Strummer.
This album is rock 'n' roll mostly
by courtesy. The music is a deft
fusion of reggae and hip-hop with
one style dominating on some songs,
the other on the rest. No one instru
ment ever stands out; Jones goes for
a seemless reggae-style blend that
leaves lots of room for the vocals on
top.
Melody is all-important on this
album. Most of the tracks are down
right hummable. This is psychology
on Jones' part. If you remember the
melody, you'll remember the words.
If you remember the words, you'll
remember the message.
Jones and his co-writers, Strummer
and Don Letts, have a lot to say and
on "No. 10 Upping St." They say it

with elegance and simplicity. All of
the songs are calm but vehement
attacks on social conditions Jones
considers dangerous. Targets include
killers-for-hire, Hollywood decadence,
drug pushers, and, more than any
other issue, the violence growing
from British unemployment.
It's tough to find an outstanding
track on this album because they're
all outstanding. The one that moved
me most was "Beyond The Pale," a
tough and gentle song where Jones
talks about his Russian immigrant
grandfather and makes a plea for
acceptance for the bitterly resented
British immigrants:
There's a rocker in Vladivostok
Got every side by Jerry Lee,
But for accidents of disorder
lliat guy could well be me.
I want everyone to know this
I want everyone to hear
Immigration built the nation
You got a bloodclaat standing
here.
