Why is that?" "Reckon we just don't need none of that fancy stuff you keep sendin' us, Lord," Sam said. "We don't take much to charity," Luke added, less tactfully. This appeared to anger the Lord His eye's flashed lightning, blackening the wallpaper slightly, and thunder rolled in the distance. "Listen, charity doesn't enter into it. I giveth and I taketh away. Period. Now I've deter mined in my omnipotent wisdom to bless you two ungrateful old coots, and you're going to be blessed whether you like it or not!" His expression softened. "You gotta understand, boys, once I determine to do something it has to be done. So why don't you fellows just tell me what you want for Christmas?" Don't want nothin'," Luke persisted stubbornly. But Sam was thinking it over. There seemed to be just one way to get they're privacy back. "Reckon we could use an extra five dollars 'til the check comes, it You got it on You." The Lord looked concerned. "Now boys, it could cause quite a bit of trou ble down here if it got around that I was handing out cash . . ." "Can I show You the door, Lord?" "Okay, okay, the Lord said, taking out his billfold. "Look, the smallest I got is a ten. I suppose you want me to create a bank teller to make change " Sma decided not to press the point. "That won't be necessary, Lord," he said, taking the proffered bill. "Than kee very kindly." The Lord heaved a sigh and stood up. The throne vanished. "Don't get up, guys," He said. He propped his golden sandle on the card table and pulled his robe up a few inches. A tin flask was strapped to his tree trunk-thick calf. He unstrapped the flask and held it out. "At least let me offer you boys, some holiday cheer." "What's this?" Sam asked, sus piciously. "Wild Turkey." "You sure it ain't myrrh, or franken stein or like that?" Luke asked. "It's a pint of straight Wild Turkey. Okay?" Once again the thunder rolled and the wallpaper smouldered briefly. "No offense." Sam put in hastily and took the flask. "Much obliged." God turned to go. At the door He turned around and said softly, "Merry' Christmas, boys." "Hrrummph," they answered in unison.
