Daily Nebraskan Friday, November 14, 1986 k Page 6 Nee debute By Jim Ballard Senior Reporter Nebraska fans will not their first taste of the Cornhuskers under Coach Danny Nee Saturday night. Kven though the Huskers will he playing in an exhibition game against Bosnia, Yugoslavia, Nee is looking at the game as a tough opener. "We're going to play to win, but we have some other objectives, and that's to evaluate our play," Nee said. "We'll look at all the things we've been doing in pract ice, our offensive and defensive sets. We'll see. how well we execute and how much we learned during practice." The Bosnia national team from Sarajevo is a member of the Yugosla vian Basketball League. Nee said he didn't know a lot about the Bosnia team but is going to find out. "I couldn't tell you a lot, but we're going to scout them Friday against Creighton," he said. The game, played in the Bob Devaney Sports Center, will not only be Nee's first appearance there but will also mark the debut of the three point field goal at Nebraska. Because of injuries, Nee said he didn't know exactly which players will start. "We could have (Brian) Carr and (Joel) Sealer at the guards and we're hoping he'll be healthy by Saturday. Bill Jackman at center and Bernard Day at one of the forward positions," he said. "At the other forward position, I'm not sure. It could be Mike Martz or Keith Neubert or even Derrick Vick. "I just want to put five healthy guys in there and then we'll be getting most of the kids in the game." Nebraska has had two scrimmages in preparation for its season opener. Nee said it was difficult to judge his team's progress. Only 1 1 players were involved in the first scrimmage because of injuries and prior academic com mitments. "During our scrimmage last week, we just couldn't get a good evaluation," Nee said. "However, the injuries are improving." Nebraska will open its regular sea son at California-Irvine Nov. 28 before playing Oregon in its home opener on Dec. 1. The game on Saturday will be a good opportunity for Nee to see Nebraska fans for the first time. "I'd like to see good student support and get the sixth man going in the Sports Center," he said. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:3") p.m. r- 1 1 KU wants good effort By Kent Endacott Staff Reporter First-year Kansas football coach Bob Valesente, who spent two years playing outfield in the Chicago Cubs organization, might have used a baseball analogy in describing Sat urday's Nebraska-Kansas game. This one might do: It's like being behind 0-2 to the Astros' Mike Scott with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Instead, he moved to the world of boxing: "For us to step out on the field aginst Nebraska is like me stepping into the ring with Marvin Hagler we just want to go the distance and avoid the knockout." Nebraska coach Tom Osborne said, however, that he is wary of the Jayhawk's potent run-and-shoot offense. Paul "Rock" Alt, Kansas offen sive back coach, said the Jayhawks have studied the Nebraska-South Carolina game film and that the coaching staff has found some weak nesses in the Husker defense. Alt said Kansas runs the run-and-shoot in a purer form than South Carolina, which gained 377 yards of offense in a 27-24 loss t o Nebraska. "South Carolina probably moved the ball on us as well as anybody we've seen all year," Osborne said. "We certainly want to do a better job against Kansas." Osborne said he is also concerned because the cold weather has ham pered defensive preparation.. He said the Huskers have been forced to spend about :)0 percent of this week's practice time indoors. "You can't practice pass cover age in there," Osborne said of the NT Fieldhouse. "The longest pass you can throw is 10 yards, and the defensive backs don't play real honest. "This is the coldest week of prac tice we've ever had here other than a bowl," he added. Kansas nearly upset Colorado last week in Boulder. After trailing 17-0, the Jayhawks outscored the Buffa loes 10-0 in the second half and brought the ball deep into Colorado territory three times in the fourth quarter. "Colorado jumped off to a lead, and maybe relaxed a little bit, but Kansas totally dominated the second half," Osborne said. On another matter, defensive tackle Lee Jones will miss the Kan sas game with a shoulder injury. I backs Keith Jones and Jon Kelley will return from injuries to travel to Kansas. Jones will play with a spec cially designed cast to protect torn ligaments in his right thumb.
