Highlighted by an upset victory by
sophomore Shawn Liston, the Nebraska
women's swimming team successfully
opened their 1 986 season by competing
in the Big Eight Invitational last week

Nebraska women's swimming coach
Ray Huppert said he was pleased by the
outcome of the meet because several of
the younger members of the squad
turned in highly regarded performances.

While Liston defeated defending Big
Eight champion Marci Harold in the
mile, freshman Lee Pennefather cap
tured both the 500-meter freestyle and
the 200-meter butterfly events.
Nebraska's Shauna Gilmore was also
a double winner in the meet as she
captured both the 100- and 200-meter
freestyle. No team scoring was kept in
the meet.
"We knew when we went into the
meet we had a good team," Huppert
said Sunday. "After seeing us compete,
we feel we have a really good team."
Huppert said one area which con
cerned him throughout the two-day
meet was the level of anxiety displayed
by some of the'Cornhuskers' younger
swimmers.
Because it was their first meet at the
collegiate level, Huppert said, some of
Nebraska's freshmen were extremely
nervous before they swam.
"They don't need to dwell mentally
before they swim," Huppert said. "If
they do, they might drain themselves."
Huppert said from what he saw of
the three remaining Big Eight schools
competing in the meet, his early expec
tations of a tough race for the confer
ence crown were realized.
Iowa State and Missouri both showed
improvement over last year, while Hup
pert said Kansas displayed enough
