Monday, October 13, 1936 Daily Nebraskan Page 3 Technology boosts production Yeutter says international food markets grow with U.S. aid YEUTTER from Page 1 the I'nited States to increase exports because of the lack of a free market on an international scale and the need of many Third-World countries to sell products in order to meet interest payments on their national debt. Yeutter said Pacific Him countries like China and Japan are potential largo importers who have the money but are hesitant to buy from the United States. He said that many feel that global demand has bottomed out and that worldwide production is still rising. The current situation leaves the Uni ted States with a large task on the supply side, trying to discourage other producing countries, Yeutter said. The United States needs to make things uncertain for them, he said, and that is what the 198.") farm bill is doing. Yeutter said that some countries now are wondering whether they should be producing because they are operating at a loss and are paying huge subsidies to producers. Yeutter said the United States, as well as many countries all over the world, are heavily subsidizing farm producers. The United States needs to persuade these governments to pull their subsidies. "Why should governments spend tax-payers dollars on production that we don't really need?" Yeutter said. He said that if the United States can get governments out of subsidizing, agricultural prices will rise. Govern ments would be spending less on agri culture and producers actually would be receiving more. Yeutter disagrees with those who blame the increase in world food pro duction on land grant universities' generosity in giving technology to less developed countries like Korea and Taiwan. In the aftermath of the Korean War and World War II, the United States aided these countries; as a result, they have beome economically prosperous. Korea and Taiwan are large agricul tural producers today because of U.S. technological assistance. They are also large importers. The overall develop ment of their economies allowed them to consume more, Yeutter said. He said he realizes the United States doesn't operate under a free and open trading system, but with leverage and aggresive negotiations, it is possible. 427 South 13th 'Hgyl: 475-0204 10 OFF Peugeot PGN 10 Reg 439.00 NOW $389.00 Bianchi Brava Reg $439.00 NOW $389.00 Bianchi Premio Reg$339.00 NOW $305.00 Cclosto Bianchi 15 Off curing es 15 Off Now Through Nov. 30 Is This Why You CnriQ toCollQ? i t ion a r : STEAK DINNER FOR TWO i i Ol AMERICA'S STEAK EXPERT ONLY I I I I a 55th & MOw 488-8988 Mr. Steak hit com up with a great idea (or the two of you!
