At the Zoo:
BCR, also known as Black Crack
Review, plays both tonight and Sat
urday at the Zoo. BCR is described
as an "Afro Nuclear Wave Funk
Swing Reggae Tango Band," but I
still don't think that describes their
brand of weirdness. These guys make
The Wallets look like normal ac
countants. But they're entertaining
and easy to dance to. If you want to
keep the music going after R.E.M.
tonight, stop by the Zoo. Cover is
$3.
At Chesterfield's:
The Linoma Mashers despite
what the ad in yesterday's paper
suggests, they don't have pseudo
Romantics hairdos will play
" tonight and Saturday at Chester
field's. The Linoma Mashers play
traditional ska and island music,
the likes unheard of from an Omaha
band. I haven't missed a Masher's
Lincoln appearance yet, and I won't
this weekend, either. Cover is $3.
On TV:
The season premiere of "Satur
day Night Live" is Saturday at 10:30
p.m. Once again the producers have
blamed a weak season on the cast
and gotten a whole new group to
replace last year's deadbeats. In
reality, they should have fired the
writers. Sigourney Weaver will be
the host, and David Johansen, former
singer for The New York Dolls, will
be the musical guest.

UNL's Laurus
is looking out
for your talent
By Matt Van Hosen
Staff Reporter
So you think you're a bit artistic, eh?
Do you have a poem, short story,
photograph or drawing you think oth
ers might like? Would you like to see it
published? The UNL English depart
ment's literary magazine, Laurus, awaits
your talent.
The Laurus, an annual publication,
is now accepting poems, stories, pho
tographs and drawings for considera
tion in this year's edition. If you are
interested, hurry the deadline for
submissions is Tuesday.
Who's eligible? "Any student, under
graduate or graduate, is encouraged to
submit any work," said Marcia South
wick, director of the Laurus this year.
Orin Stepanek, a former UNL Eng
lish professor, provided the funds to
begin a literary magazine at UNL. Ste
panek was strongly interested in the
idea of publishing the literary works of
students. Southwick described the
Laurus as "a project of fine arts of all
sorts."
The editing process of the Laurus is
done by students, not professors. The
students have taken two or three
creative-writing workshops, and that's
what they are looking for creative
writing.
The Laurus should be on sale in early
February for $1. Southwick said he
hopes copies will be available in the
university bookstores this year.
' Students from all colleges are en
couraged to send submissions. South
wick said that "it would be great to
have a lot of participation from stu
dents in the art department especially."
Submissions should be sent to:
Laurus, 142 Andrews Hall, Uni
versity of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lin
coln, Nebraska 6S58S.
Submissions should include name,
address and phone number. Photos and
drawings should be rendered in a
medium that will be well-depicted in
black and white on a 5-by-7 inch page.
All material, except artwork, cannot be
returned without a self-addressed
stamped envelope.
