Conference on East-West relations
A mjor international conference for
academic specialists in East-West
relations from the United States and
Germany will be at UNL through
Wednesday.
The conference, "The Road Ahead:
Strengths and Weaknesses of East and
West," is being hosted by the UNL
Institute of International Studies, said
Richard Lonsdale, acting executive dean
of international affairs. The confer
ence, which began Sunday, is at the
Nebraska Center for Continuing Edu
cation, 33rd and Holdrege streets.
Sponsors are the Conference on
European Problems and the Studien
gesellschaft fuer Fragen mittel und
Osteuropaeischer Partnerschaft of West
Germany.
Ivan Volgyes, UNL professor of polit
ical science, said the conference on
Eastern European Problems has been
in existence for more than 30 years. Its
meetings have been held to discuss
ways of reinforcing relations between
the United States, Germany and other
Western allies. The West German orga
nization, closely concerned with Euro
pean politics and society, is joining the
UNL conference to broaden the scope
of conference topics.
Topics on the conference agenda
include Soviet-American-European re
lations, the role of the United States
and. Germany in the alliance system
and the changing role of the American
Soviet relationship.
