As a newspaper that has a circulation that reaches thousands of students, I firmly believe you should have more fully investigated any subject matter before making outlandish accusations and before printing mere assumptions. If you had produced facts and fig ures that contradicted that Boosalis could not in fact invigorate economic development to fund her programs, then your arguments would have been more feasible. I am speaking from a standpoint of fact when I say Boosalis did initiate new programs, through increases in economic development revenue and federal grants, when she was mayor of Lincoln. It is beyond my ability to conceive why and how the DN could logically cast aside all of Boosalis' proposed economic development programs, when many of them had been tried and proven successful on a smaller model in Lincoln. To project defeat for these programs, was an opinion based solely without fact. One point that thoroughly distressed me was that the editorial criticized Boosalis for being innovative and crea tive as a candidate; one who had pro posed needed programs for our state. In the same breath, Kay Orr was con gratulated for limiting her proposed programs. If we want a governor with out vision, then Kay Orr is the clear choice. Let's talk taxes for a moment. I am comfortable in believing the words of Boosalis, a respected and conscien tious elected official, those words being: she will not raise taxes. Humor me for a moment, but any tax increase is in itiated by the 49-member legislature; then it progresses through a series of hearings, debates, and votes by that body. And if that body deems it neces sary to increase taxes, then so shall it be. The editorial also comments on a need for consistency and truth by Boo salis. I would like to point out Kay Orr is the candidate that is taking the voters for suckers. Orr's campaign com mercials on TV are outright lies. Boosa lis has said she will not raise taxes, but God's hand could bolster U.S. defense ROYKO from Page 4 "Listen, he's going to be a winner. Who's George Bush or any of the other candidates got going for them com pared to God? I bet Bush can't even get the Senate chaplain to endorse him." Yes, God would be a considerable political advantage. What if they ask what you can do for them? "Medical costs." What about medical costs? "Have you looked at a hospital bill lately? An aspirin costs $2. Every time an intern says good morning, it's another C-note. But this Robertson is one of those faith healers. He can pat you on the head and get rid of your migraines, give you a pat on the rump and the old hemorrhoids are gone, tweak your nose and you drop your crutches and start dancing a polka. You can't get cured cheaper than that. We wouldn't need Medicare." That could have considerable appeal. What ityouta asked about such issues as defense Mw(4?b - Lb 1 J . "A snap. I telh-them: 'Don't worry. With Pat in the White House, we'll be stronger without spending any money. Remember, all Pat has to do is ask You Know Who, and He'll send those Roos- kies some pestilence and locusts and give 'em sores. Remember what He did with the Red Sea?' Kext time, it might be the whole Baltic Sea flooding their basements." I can see the possibilities. But what if Robertson should speak in tongue. "Oh, you mean that religious stuff, where he opens his mouth and all kinds of strange words come out, and nobody is sure what he's talking about?" "Fine. Let him talk that way. It didn't hurt Reagan, did it?" fi 1986 By the Chicago Tribune Distributed by Tribune Media Services, Inc.
