Voice off America9 team earns own stripes
CARAY from Page 6
"Between us we're on 80 million
cable homes, which is just amazing,"
Caray said. "The odds of two people in
the same family winding up broadcast
ing on the two biggest cable operations
in the country is really inconceivable."
While in high school, Caray began
doing a weekly high school sports show
on KMOX in St. Louis. He said he hoped
to play football at Missouri, but hurt
his knee his senior year of high school.
While in college at Missouri, Caray
began doing a local sports show before
becoming the Missouri football color
announcer.
"One color guy didn't work out, and
by then I knew the players and I knew
the coach and all that shit, so they just
had me do it. That's really how I got
started."
From color announcing for Missouri
to covering the Goodwill Games and
the Atlanta Braves for WTBS. Caray said
he's had a busy year of broadcasting.
Caray said it's the Braves' broad
casts that have given him the most
notoriety. He said he has been critic
ized for being a "homer,"
"You have a rooting interest," Caray
said. "In journalism school they teach
you that you must be objective, and you
can't root for a team, and that's abso
lutely bullshit. You can be objective
and still root for a team."
Caray said his day-to-day contact
with the team makes it difficult not to
root for them.
"It would be hard not to root for
them because you know them and their
families and you want them to do well,"
Caray said. "From a selfish point of
view, the more the Braves win, the more
people watch and listen to the games
and the more people hear me. It would
be awful to be talking and have no one
listening. I don't think they would pay
me very well if that were the case."
Caray said he thinks his strengths as
an announcer are his honesty and his
sense of humor.
"It's not like covering the hostage
crisis," Caray said. "It's the toy de
partment. It's supposed to be fun. If
you watch this game (Nebraska-Illinois)
at home and you root like hell for
Nebraska, it's not going to happen, but
if Nebraska loses, a guy might throw his
shoe across the room and be upset for
five minutes. But then he's going to
realize his kid's sick or his wife's about
to leave him or his boss is an asshole
and all that is more important than
who wins this football game."
