Monday, September 22, 1986 Daily Nebraskan Page 3 Star Ware limits research Expert fears SDI program will distort universities' priorities By Tammy Kaup Associate News Editor "It was a very unemotional display, wasn't it?" "Just the facts." Comments heard Friday after Vera Kistiakowsky, professor of Physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology spoke about "SDI and the Scientist" aptly described her presentation style. But the facts she chose seemed to make her point. Kistiakowsky said that she and many other U.S. scientists are opposed to the Strategic Defense Initiative project (the space-based "Star Wars" defense sys tem which would destroy enemy mis siles before they reach U.S. soil); and that they fear the implications it may hold for university research. Kistiakowsky told an audience at Nebraska Wesleyan University that while the Star Wars concept has the attrac tion of eliminating defensive weapons with a defense system strong enough to guard the civilian population from a nuclear attack, it is technically un feasible. ". . .Many scientists have come to the conclusion that a virtually perfect defense is impossible, she said. "Not that is improbable that is impos sible." Some argue that doubts about SDI are comparable to doubts about the Apollo project, she said. But is is not a good comparison, she said, because while putting a man on the moon seemed to conflict with the laws of nature "you had infinite confidence that the law of gravity was not going to change, whereas in the building of a defense you are facing an enemy that clearly is going to change its strategy toward whatever you are doing." She said that some agree the Star Wars project is just "research and development" and question others' opposition. "It's not just reesearch and devel opment," she said, "It's research, development and demonstration." There will be a demonstration phase, she said, "that in the minds of most people will violate the ABM treaty and will remove the restraints on the Soviet Union." She said the accessory testing of systems in Star Wars, development is the reason the Reagan administration will not sign the nuclear test ban treaty. Star Wars will escalate the arms race, she said, because defense is penetrable. "We have the opportunity to explore where out intelligence leads us," she said. TUDENT AID!
