An uneven look at Hollywood in the 'UOs. The focus is on old serials, racism, sexploitation and other scandals. It's not great, but there are some neat trailers and newsreels along with short interviews with Hal Roach (Our Gang, Laurel & Hardy) and Roger Corman. Friday, Sept 19th, 4:50 a.m. VVOVVT (Channel 6) ' Hw Spider Woman Strikes Back " (1946) Gale Sondergaard, Rondo Hatton In 1936, Gale Sondergaard won the best supporting actress Oscar for her performance in "Anthony Adverse." Considered to be one of Hollywood's classiest villains during the '40s, she won lasting fame among horror and mystery fans when she played Sherlock Holmes' arch enemy in the 1944 film "The Spider Woman." Then in 1947, the Red Scare hit the movie industry. The House UnAmerican Activities Commit tee (HUAC) was set up in Congress to We Rock Lincoln! ,-1 " I j l y ' "I Independent study purge the film business of commie pinkos. Anyone caught being a leftist or thinking unAmerican thoughts was run out of town. A group of writers and directors, known as the Hollywood Ten, refused to comply with the investiga tions of HUAC, and were convicted of contempt of Congress. They were thrown in jail. Ms. Sondergaard's husband, producer-director Herbert Biberman was one of the ten. Many celebrities snitched on fellow actors and the mere mention of a person's name was enough to ruin their career. Gale Sondergaard's name was mentioned and after 1949 she did no films until 1969. She died last year at the age of 85. Rondo Hat ton was reportedly a hand some chap until he contracted acrome galy, a disease which enlarges the bones of the lace. He found small parts in films in the early ':50s and then moved on to I'niversal and Monogram Studios as a spine-snapping murderer known as "The Creeper." In the Sher lock Holmes film "Pearl of Death" (1944), Basil Rathbone describes Rondo. "He's a monster with the chest of a buffalo and the arms of a gorilla!" Gee thanks, Basil. Usually Rondo had the thankless task of delivering lines like "Shut up" or "Stop screaming." Universal exploi ted Rondo's misfortune and billed him as "the monster without make-up" and "the ugliest man in pictures." His co stars said he was an extremely nice fellow. Most of us horror and mystery fans are sort of protective of Rondo so don't be making any snide comments. My friend has a Rondo Hatton mask that cost $40. Now that's devotion. In this film, which is not a sequel to "The Spider Woman," Gale Sonder gaard owns a ranch where she kills hired hands and drains their blood to give to her carnivorous plant. Rondo sneers and leers as her servant, "Mario, the Monster Man." Saturday, Sept. 20th, Midnight, WOVVT (channel 6) "House of Dracula" (1945) Lon Chancy, Jr., John Carradine The Universal horror films of the '30s & '40s are some of the all time best. This is your all-star monsterama. John Carradine is the skinniest Dracula ever. Lon Chaney shows up, falls for a hunch-backed nurse, and becomes wolty a connle of limes. A luincji backej n ii.rsi .'
