X September 17, 1986 NU officii Griesen looking forward to new post By Michael Hooper Senior Reporter The associate vice chancellor of academic affairs said he wants to build relations between students and admin istration at UNL "There's no substitute to having face to face contact with student leaders," said dames uiiroeii. r7 Griesen is being recommended by UNL Chancellor Martin Massengale to become interim vice chancellor for student affairs. He is expected to be confirmed to the NU Board of Regents at its October meeting. Griesen would assume the vice chancellor duties Oct. 1. "Obviously administration cannot speak with all 24,000 students, but it can keep an open dialogue between it and student leaders," Griesen said. Griesen was named to the post to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of William Lewis, who was recently named vice president for university relations for NU. Griesen has been associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNL since 1984. He also is UNL's director of summer sessions. Since coming to UNL, Griesen has been active in the devel opment of innovative programs for im - proving the academic performance of undergraduate students and integrat ing new students into the university far Room number changes confuse students, teachers n i 1 1 J. -1.U By Kari Hulac Staff Reporter A complete list of room number changes in the Administration Build ing has been compiled by the UNL Institute of Planning and Research. Some commonly used offices are the Registration Service Counter which is now in Room 17A; Scholarships and Financial Aid, now in Room 22; Student Accounts, now in Room 110E, and Stu dent Academic Records, which is in Room 107D. Confusion occurred because the north end of the building, which was formerly called Teachers College, had room numbers that conflicted with those in the Administration Building. I up for j ob community. Griesen helped develop the New Student Enrollment and the Freshman Foundations Programs. Griesen teaches a class for one program. As interim vice chancellor for stu dent affairs, Griesen will oversee Aca demic Services, which includes regis tration, records, admissions and ad vising, student activities and financial aid. In addition, Griesen will oversee the Student Center 4, an umbrella organi zation that covers the Academic Suc cess Center, Multi-Cultural Affairs, the Counseling Center and General Stu dies and Advising. He will also oversee the directors of the University Health Center, the Nebraska unions, the Div ision of University Housing and the Judicial Affairs Office. Griesen said it is important to create an environment in which students feel comfortable in asking faculty and administration for help. "The best student affairs we can make here is one that when encoun tered by students, the staff will know how to help," Griesen said. , Griesen said that one of his goals as interim vice chancellor for student affairs is to make more'effective use of the computerized information systems. Information systems help administra tion have effective management, he said. Resources in student affairs are scarce, he said, and this worries Griesen. "I saw some of the meager salaries of people in student affairs m the budget, and I was literally shocked," Griesen said. "We're running on dedication, but I suppose everybody is. numbers.
