NU freshman happy at QB By Tim Hartmann Staff Reporter Freshman Gerry Gdowski came to Nebraska with some impressive statis tics. The 6-1, 180-pound quarterback passed for 2,613 yards and 34 touch downs. But that's not all. Gdowski was also the starting point guard on the Fre mont basketball team, where he aver aged 15 points a game. During his jun ior year he won gold medals at the state meet in the 400- and 800-meter races. In his senior year he finished fourth in the 400 and second in the 800. He was named the Lincoln Journal-Star High School Athlete of the Year during his junior and senior years. Iowa State and Iowa recruited Gdowski, but he committed to Nebraska early in the recruiting season. "Nebraska was always pretty high on my list," he said. "I've been impressed with the program for a long time." Before coming to Nebraska, Gdowski had one more football game to play the 26th annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl, where the state's best high school players meet on the field. Gdowski completed five of 13 passes for 132 yards, including a 56-yarder to fellow Husker recruit Darwin Snyder. For his efforts, he was named the game's out standing offensive player. Gdowski's performance in the Shrine Bowl helped him clear up any doubts he may have had as to which position he wanted to play at Nebraska. "I wasn't sure what position I wanted to play, but after that (the Shrine Bowl game) I was sure I wanted to play quar terback," he said. Gdowski started at quarterback for the Huskers as the freshmen opened their season Thursday against Ells worth Junior College of Iowa. The freshman team's first game was to be at Iowa State on Sept. 19, but the Iowa State junior varsity canceled their sea son. The game with Ellsworth was just scheduled last week. Once the football season is over, Gdowski said he plans to review his Performance and decide which posi tion he would like to play during his varsity career. Besides quarterback, Gdowski also has experience at defen sive back and split end. "Freshman year, I'ii play quarterback, then I'll just sit back and look at my options," he said. One thing Gdowski has discovered is that it's difficult picking up the Neb raska system. "Everything is complicated, but the coaches are really helpful," he said. Despite the difficulties, Gdowski said he's glad to be at Nebraska. "It's definitely one of the best pro grams in the country," Gdowski said. 'Everyone knows that."
