Despite a change of command, The
Kansas "Air Force" is expected to stick
to its proven plan of at tack.
First-year Kansas football coach Bob
Valesente, who served as the Jayhawk's
offensive coordinator, will keep Kan
sas' wide-open offense intact,
"The system hasn't changed much,"
Valesente said. "Hopefully, we'll be
able to get better every week. We don't
have a lot of depth, so we need to stay

On offense, Kansas returns five star
ters, but has been troubled by injuries
this fall. Offensive lineman Bob Pieper,
mentioned as a candidate for post
season honors, suffered a broken foot
in the first practice of fall camp, and
starting tackle Jim Davis suffered a
pinched nerve in his neck. Pieper is
expected to miss at least the first two
games.
To add depth to the offensive line,
Valesente has moved Steve Nave, who
started at defensive tackle last season,
to offensive guard this fall.

est Jayhawk, with a 435-pound bench
press.
At the running back spot, Arnold
Snell, a 6-0, 200-pound sophomore from
Mount Vernon, N.J., has emerged as
starting tailback. The Jayhawks are
expected to use a one-back offense
most of this season.
Mike Orth, a 6-5, 205-pound senior,
will start at quarterback.
"Mike has been crisp in workouts,"
Valesente said, "He's throwing the ball
very well. We should be able to move
the ball offensively."
The defense returns 23 lettermen
and should be the strength of the Kan
sas team, Valesente said. All Big Eight
tackle Phil Porter and Eldridge Avery
should give Kansas the best defensive
line since the mid 70s.
"Our front is really strong and has
played well together this fall," he said.
"The defense is going to be the strength
of our team. We should be more expe
rienced on defense."
The secondary should be improved,
with juniors Milt Garner and Mike
Fischer and seniors Wayne Ziegler and
Jamey Steinhauser comprising the
starting unit.
"We have more depth in our secon
dary than we had the last two years,"
Valesente said. "They should be able to
concentrate on stopping the passing
attack because of all the strength up
front."
