According to Investigator Hob Fey of the UNL police department, there are a "million and one" things that students can do to prevent their property from being stolen or vandalized. Fey said that students should remember the motto "out of sight, out of mind" when they lock their cars by placing all valuables in the trunk. Thefts from automobiles occur most often when students leave cars unlocked, or a stereo is visible to anyone who walks by the car, he said. Off-campus students should take security precautions By Jen Deselms Staff Reporter Each fall many students move off campus for the first time without taking the time to think about the security of their new homes. Lincoln police officials said there are three parts of a crime triangle that must be present for a crime to occur: opportunity, desire and abil ity. By taking away opportunity, a ciminal with both desire and ability will not be able to commit the crime, said Officer Shannon Sydik quality name brands in every Now per month Video Recorders 5 pc. Many "quick thefts" occur within minutes, Off campus students can protect themselves by installing peep holes and chain locks on their doors, keeping windows locked and plac ing two names on their mailboxes. Fey said that when a person moves into an apartment he or she should change all of the locks because of the number of previous tenants who still may possess keys. Fey said that bicycle theft is an increasing problem on City Campus, because more students are using of the LPD crime prevention Unit. If students are unsure of their security, they can have their homes or apartments evaluated by the LPD crime prevention unit. For the best protection, Sydik suggested 1-inch deadbolt locks for doors and double-cylinder locks for doors near windows. Double-cylinder locks must be opened with a key from both sides, preventing a crimi nal from breaking a window and reaching in to open the door. A bicycle padlock with a thick chain is a neccesity, Fey said. Another way to prevent bicycle theft is to license bicycles with the City of Lincoln at the fire department, local bike shops, or university police. The UNL Police Department is concerned with the safety of stu dents who walk alone at night, Fey said. He recommended that students notify their roommates of where they are going and what time they will be back. City Campus has four emergency telephones. Fey said students should note that the phones are for emer gency use only. They are located at 14th and W streets, Architectural Hall, west of Avery Hall, and at 19th and Vine streets. doors open during the night to cool their homes, Sydik said. These open windows and doors are an invitation to criminals and allow them to enter a home quickly and quietly. No matter what, Sydik advised never to let a stranger in. If a stranger wants to make a phone call, make it for him or her, she said. If a repairman comes to the door, ask for identification. One inexpensive, yet effective way to deter home break-ins is to use bright lights, Sydik said. A well lit house often discourages criminals, Emmy winner Ted Knight dead at 62 By the Associated Press LOS ANGELES Actor Ted Knight, who won two Emmy awards for his por trayal of a television news anchorman on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and who starred in "Too Close for Comfort," died Tuesday, a spokesman said. He was 62. Knight was hospitalized last year for removal of a cancerous growth from his urinary tract. Earlier this month, he returned to the hospital for treatment of complications from that surgery. His doctors ordered him not to return to work because he was not fully recovered from the surgery, spokesman Henri Bollinger said after Knight was released from the hospital for the last time. Knight won Emmys in 1973 and 1976 for outstanding performance by an actor in a supporting role in comedy for "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Knight played Roger Dennis, owner of a New York City escort service, in "The Ted Knight Show," in the spring of 1978 on CBS. He played a middle aged illustrator from 1980-83 on ABC's "Too Close for Comfort." "Too Close for Comfort," in syndica tion, had been scheduled to start film ing a new season the middle of this month.
