A I'M. senior is one of t he top 1 0 college women named by
(ilamour magazine this year.
As one of the Top 10 College Women in the Nation
winners, Mary Many, 22, reuiu'd a trip to New York City
and a monetary prize. The award is given on the basis of
academic merit, extra curricular activities and leadership.
Glamour has given the award to 10 women every year for 30
years.
As part of the award, Marcy was flown to New York City to
talk with women leaders from various professions. Marcy
could choose the woman she wanted to meet. Glamour
arranged a meeting for her with Barbara Black, the first
female dean of an Ivy League law school. Black became
Dean of the Law College at Columbia University in
December 1985. Marcy and Black talked for three hours. She
said she had Black's undivided attention and was impressed
with Black's success in balancing a family and children
with a professional life.
Marcy will graduate in May with degrees in political
science and speech communication and minors in philo
sophy and sociology. She said she is considering attending
graduate school for either public or social policy, possibly
at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Marcy is a candidate for a Degree with High Distinction.
Marcy's experiences include serving as chairwoman on
the University JudicialAppeals Board, chairwoman for the
Equal Opportunity Coalition and president of the Nebraska
Union Board. She was an intern to Nebraska State Sen.
Sandra K. Scofield earlier this year.
Marcy said her role models on campus include Lou Ann
Krager, a doctoral candidate in educational psychology, and
Sara Boatman, director of Campus Activities and Programs.
Boatman said she had talked to officials from Glamour
magazine who were impressed with Marcy's long-term
impact on campus. Marcy identified a location for the
Culture Center and was concerned with minority students
during her long record of campus leadership, Boatman said.
Marcy is a good example of the well-rounded person a
liberal arts education can shape, Boatman said. She said
she foresees Marcy making an impact on the world and
predicts she will rise to a high position as a U.S. senator or a
high level judge.
